Under certain conditions I'll completely ignore it and set up as if it's not even a thing.
1. Big water. Single digit wind speed
2. Flooded timber ( once below the canopy the wind isn't a thing unless its howling)
Want to dicuss/argue about it?


Tomorrow I got south wind at 5. I'm going to set up as if it's not there on big water.

Well as a kid I was always taught to set up on the upwind portion of water as the ducks did not want to be fighting the wind/waves. That being said it has been my observation that typically the live birds are usually on the downwind side of a body of water unless it’s crazy wind. I’m guessing maybe it’s because that’s where all the food ends up and maybe makes feeding easier. Kind of the same concept why you see puddle ducks around swans because when the swans are feeding they stir up the deeper water.

Either way is fine with me. A couple notes on my untuned duck call and it doesn’t matter where I’m set up those birds are coming

One year I bought that.
Shells kept splitting and getting stuck in the chamber.

Last season I'd hunt then scout and if I jumped ducks by "the logs" that's where I'd set up the next day.
Just sit there and wait. No calling just wait and keep your eye on the clock. They'll show up 2 minutes b4 you can shoot.
Sad but that's what I did to get my 8 Illinois mallards.
