Does anyone on this site hunt sea ducks? I have a couple of questions regarding hunt tidal waters. When hunting a tide, how do you go about hunting it? When you are scouting and you see birds, do you make a note of the current tide and hunt the same tide the next day? Or are the birds in deep enough water that hunting the tides really does not matter?

I have limited experience with sea ducks in tidal areas.

We just look for the spots they are feeding, and set up there. Water depth isn't really an issue as they'll feed in 100+ fow with out concern.

Typically the tide isn't an issue, as opposed to hunting brant, that come in to feed off the exposed grass at low tide.

Seaducks fly all day long! Just throw some sleds out and wait. There is no calling, they are stupid. And fast, bring a few boxes of shells. Tide doesn't matter.

When you all are scouting, how much boat fuel would you say on average do you burn? a full tank? half tank? or scout from truck on the roads?

We usually scout and hunt at the same time, usually 12-20 gallon per boat per day.

we do the same thing, and every time we get set up jgun starts the second guessing in how we shoulda gone a few more miles cause he glassed a few birds

I can vouch for this. Never had I seen a midget shoot over a sasqustch who's trying to duck and drive a tender at the same time.

at least a 40hp

where and how often do you plan on hunting? I ask cause you seem to be willing to spend some money just to hunt a few days

I want to make a yearly week long trip to the east coast for sea ducks. Then hunt Devil's Lake out here for divers as well.

A 40hp on my 1648 flat bottom only does 30mph with a light load. Your gonna want like a 90+ IMO.

I was thinking minimum 90hp. Just having a hard time figuring out how much motors cost.

If you go new it's a lot. I got a quote on a new 60hp E-tech for $7200. If your going on the sea, your going to want a reliable motor, so new or like new is what I would look for if I was you.

They build a real solid boat. Bigger is better, you can hunt most anything a sane person would feel safe in in that boat.

Steve will try and talk you into an E-tec. Don't do it. Get a ricer 4stroke of some variety.

Check Ebay for new motors, you can find some deals.
I bought a brand new Yamaha 90 4stroke for $7200 including freight from FL to MI, prop and crontrols were $350 and I was cocked and locked for less than $7600

I am a little off center on most things. I do have a ton of respect for the ocean and big water, so if it's getting kinda rough I am not afraid to call it a day. I'm from Ohio so I would like to plan a family vacation then pick it up on the way home.

I am going to contact DWB soon and get some info on a boat. I am going to order it this spring. My goals with this boat are, hunt both oceans and all the great lakes. Couple that with weekend trips to DL to hunt and that should round out my plans.

1-Honda
2-Suzuki or Yamaha

In that order when talking four stroke outboards, the rest are junk.

Two stroke Yamaha are still the most reliable.

One of my hunting buddies had that boat but, he called it 17'. He had a 60hp on it and it was way, way way under powered. Don't know where Capt hunts but, when you come out here in the Pacific, you want more motor. A jacking plate to mount it to is almost a must for when you run shallow bay water and marshes.
I would say 90 minimum but, if you have the cash, 115hp would be the ideal. It will get you on top and at the dock when SHTF.
I have hunted seaducks within view of the boat launch. The distance, time traveled and gas used will change with the circumstances.
When we hunt squaws, we look for shelfs at 45-60'. That is where they feed in the areas we hunt them. It's like any other hunting, over time, you'll notice patterns that work for your hunt areas best.
