Supposed to be cold down the flyway, guess we'll take it!

Sure glad "balmy" isn't projected for our area

If La nina is under way as has been forecast we should have a "normal" winter. Hopefully we get the "polar vortex" effect this year.

There was a rare August storm over Canada that had the meteorologist talking just a few days ago.

What we want is this, from November 2014 and those early and potent punches of cold.

Of course this was the odd perfect storm of weather happenings that put extra birds here extra early, and had everyone wanting to start opening the seasons extra early. Didn't work out the following year on that policy

Yea was good for most I know, but unfortunately that odd occurrence of early weather got everyone's wheels turning on tinkering with the seasons.

We didn't change anything in east zone. Was mostly the marsh guys led by commissioner Courville.

Yep, and they all wanted to set his house ablaze when they had poor hunting to kick off the CZ last November. You'll never please everyone, that's why its best to just leave the middle-ground alone and open on the "traditional" dates, much like we'll have this season.

Worked out swell for me last year. No birds in the surrounding areas but we were able to brave the mosquitos for a short hunt killing nothing but grays. We were the exception in our area, though. That day's conditions would have been considered poor even for a Sept teal hunt

Preseason

Postby Ericdc » Mon Aug 15, 2016 3:01 pm

Chad and I have had a ton of email correspondence, he wants the coastal zone to open on the Saturday closest to the 10th.

Chad says
I would say that 2 out of every 5 years you will see a CZ opener the 7 and 8 of Nov. One is the second Sat (8th) and the other is the 1st (7th). I like the Sat closest to the 10th as a good rule of thumb which gives you those 2 dates.

For the record, I think Chad knows his stuff, and I generally agree with him on most of his thinking. The only major disagreement I had, and it wasn't disrespectful, was when they gave us more days to hunt specks instead of 74/3.

But i can say, I would not want to pluck more than 2 specks at a time either. So I'll take the extra days. I don't agree that adding 14 days causes less pressure than going from 2 to 3 birds.

Any added speck pressure is myopic.

A speck hunter in every field along highway 14 doesn't help either right?

Pretty sure folks would bitch a lot worse about limiting private land blinds than not being allowed to shoot as many birds or as long as the fed framework.

Yea, I wasn't saying put any limits on private land hunting. That's the landowners decision, just know there's a ton of pressure on them down there.

I always get a chuckle about guides and their concerns about pressure.

As for Courville I do think he knows what he's talking about and I also think his approach is very self serving as is the case with most hunters who hunt a specific area. Trouble is Commission members are supposed to see the big picture when making decisions.

You betcha we help put pressure on the birds. If it wasn't for us, there would be a whole lot less people who could afford any speck hunting.

Meaning a guided speck hunt is probably considerably less than a speck lease? Since there's not really any public places that offer a decent chance at specks?

Eggzackly. You could make several guided hunts for the price of a share in a decent blind. Though that may not be the case for long, given how private parties unconcerned with turning some profit are driving lease prices up.

Such an honorable trait and someone has to do it so it just as well be you. This year you got seven extra days of good will... ;)

We're still two days short of predicted crest, one "area hydrology expert" on the tube said it could be as much as six weeks before the water drops to normal along the coast. But the NOAA prediction chart seems to offer the hope of a sharper drop in Mermentau than initially shown. Just have to wait and see...

Good luck and may God Bless the less fortunate. I have an Aunt and several cousins in the BR area that have been devastated. I know what I will be doing this weekend if the water falls enough for the work to begin.

Have to admit I'm dreading the cleanup - and it's probably not going to be my stuff we'll be trashing.

On a lighter note, pretty good cold front hitting the upper midwest this weekend. Seeing big north winds and much cooler temps for the dakotas. with the full moon tomorrow, maybe we'll see some birds.

OK, more seriously, current rice prices, around $16 a barrel, are another disaster.
