Pre-season Setup

We're only about 2 weeks away from the Early Goose/Teal/Dove opener on Sept. 1st! I've started cleaning up the dekes and blowing the dust out of my calls. Mason my chocolate comes home on the 2nd and should be ready for some simple retrieves. The new duck blind is ready to go up and scheduled for erection on the 26th of this month just before the season.
A walk through of the property showed good dove numbers and a decent number of home grown woodies. Geese are starting to hit the cut wheat field while stretching their wings for the up coming early flights of resident giants.
Will post a number of pics of the blind once it's started through completion and the progression of the season on my new property!

Lucky to catch that much cattail land dry enough to support your little shredder I'd think. Hope your luck with the land's development holds.

Well I'm still exploring my options because the DNR and USFG both don't see any benefits in removing cattails to provide open water for ducks, shore birds, invertebrates, ect. in existing wetlands. They're only interested in reverting farm land back to wetlands by breaking tiles and what not. So my only other option would be to pull permits to dredge out the cattails and then pull more permits to deposit those cattails back in the marsh or pay to haul them somewhere for disposal. All of which is outside my price range.
I'll see how this season goes and start making some plans for next year. I've already decided I'm going to be planting a sunflower field for doves so we'll see what happens as I continue to explore the possibilities and maybe after this fall I'll decide not to do anything else.. time will tell!

You can't just poison the cattails and let something more useful come on?

I could, however the creek running through my property ties into a pretty big river and there's all types of environmental permits I'd need.

They are cutting two 50 foot openings in the south levee at Rockefeller to help drain grand lake.

I'm sure that's been mis-threaded, but it was my understanding they were blowing levees in Rockefeller a couple or three days ago. So much of the official news has been inaccurate that it's little wonder one can't trust the grapevine. Sorry for the interruption, Dukman.

Sorry Dukman, I did open and post in the wrong thread.
Looking good. Can't wait to see the hunts from that place.

Well the blind build has officially begun! We were able to get the posts drove the floor laid, the walls framed, and the roof hung and mostly sheeted... Next it's sheeting the walls, hanging the door, building the dog ramp/hide and putting on the rubber roof.
The finishing the exterior with paint and brushing it up... Then finishing the interior

That's not a blind, no, that's a cabin.

Very nice! looks like a muddy good time out there. And you survived to make these posts; that's how we know you're a long way from S. Louisiana.......no one would have survived doing all that in one day (or even one weekend for that matter) in our current temps and humidity.

Impressive!
Have some minor carpenter criticism but will hold it back until I get there with a hammer and a LEVEL.

lol yeah on day one we forgot the level... needless to say I grossly underestimated the time it would take to get it erected (the mud had a lot to do with that). We'll be finishing up the exterior this weekend, getting the camo on, and then I'll be getting to work on the interior getting the plumbing and electrical done.

Well hunting has been piss poor and that's a generous assessment. I got to work cleaning decoys and tiding up the trailer... I'll post some more pics but here's the start of it.

Finished up the trailer and sheeting the duck blind... Just have to camo the blind up a bit and we'll be ready for the opener this weekend...

The wood ducks already like the new blind...

That's because you haven't brushed it yet to let them know season's coming.

The stark white rubber roof must be like a beacon...like moths to a flame...

Yeah it is a DuroLast roof so latex paint will stick to it... Also going to throw some grass mats on there to break up the "boxy" look of it.

Finally got the blind camo'd up... Not as good as I'd like but hopefully it'll do for this year... I haven't put anything in the blind yet but that too is coming..

Looks like you found the yellow-handle hammer I've been looking for.
Coke? I know they sell beer around there somewhere.

Took the Argo out to the property for the first time today and it performed as expected... its going to be an invaluable tool for managing the property!
