with winter holding on so late this spring we finally splashed the boat last Wed. didn't have a choice as I had charters starting on Thursday.

Image

fishing was great for being cold and windy and we got some really nice browns for our efforts.

this one went to the taxidermist shop.

they caught lots of fish, one went to the taxidermist. They released most of the fish they caught if they were in good shape, ones that were
bleeding or really hooked deep we kept. it was so cold saturday the planer board lines were freezing up and the clips wouldn't slide out so we had to keep
bringing them in to clean the ice off.

Bill,

schedule is spotty, not a big surprise with peoples daily costs going up constantly. you know the old saying when expenses go up the first thing to get cut is hobby expenses. I have kept my prices steady for the last 7 years to give people a break even though my fuel expenses are a lot higher, with the price of fuel at 4.55 /gallon last week it stings putting in a couple hundred gallons of fuel. With my schedule of work outside of fishing I am good with my trip numbers, July and August are by far my busiest fishing months. Trying to take care of 2 farms, run a construction business and a fishing business I have very little spare time from April till October, and with construction work lately I haven't had any time since last november to do much other than working 7 days a week.

John,

there are still a few Penn Yan's around the area, they are the ultimate great lakes fishing boat, I have never felt compromised in that boat and I have been out in some pretty rough seas with it. the layout is great, its got a wide open fishing platform which allows for lots of fish fighting room. A pair of 350 chevy's push it along pretty good and its not that bad on fuel as long as you stay out of the 4 barrels. The biggest benefit especially this year is I only draft 2 feet, I can go where few others dare venture because they draft 1-2 foot more than me.

banker,,
they actually fight pretty good, I run 8foot med/light action rods with linecounter reels spooled with 12lb ande main line with a 10 lb test leader so you gotta be gentle with them, they don't have the shoulders of a king salmon but for their size they give a pretty scrappy fight in the cold water. I would rather catch them now than in July when the water is warm, in July they seem to fight more like a lake trout.

Where are you out if reeltime? I am very familiar with the layout of the penn yan, what size year is that one? I had a customer with a 24 or 26, can't remember that had twin inline 6's, was a beast.

Sodus Bay lake Ontario, about half way between Rochester and Syracuse NY.

1988 predator 288

the "true" Penn yan's were built to last, AMF took over for a few years of production and those are ok but they weren't built as good as the real penn yan's
that tj's dad built. its a shame they are not building them still.

they are a great fishing boat, and i'm not just saying that because I own one, they are known to be great fishing boats. Reasonably priced penn yans are not on the market for long. those 265 pro hunters are a great trailerable fishing boat, stable boat with a huge fishing platform.

I hear ya. The guy I have worked with for the past five years had to get an off-season job after 08 because it just fell off too much. July and August always seem to take care of themselves. It's a shame that our May and June are so spotty because people usually end up missing out on the best fishing of season. Then they show up in August when it's hit or miss and ask "when is the best time to come?"

Hopefully this summer is better, if for no other reason than we sent a lot of people home happy last year. Lots of kings and we had them from April 20 all the way through.

Whats a "big king" for you guys? Like something you would walk down the dock to take a look at if someone else caught it?

Good luck over there!

While at gold beach, OR I got a fair amount of attention for catching a 36.5lb king. The main tackle shop on the river hands out a bronze colored pin for 30-39 pound range, silver for 40lb range and gold for 50+. My first salmon ever got me a pin.

Yep, plunkin'. I never drift fish anymore. I'm gettin' too old and lazy. I would like to go out after some springers with the bobber rod but, I don't fish fall anymore, so I don't have any good eggs to bobber fish with.

A big fish in Tillamook area used to be 60-70#. I caught a 72# in the Trask, when I was a teenager. Nowadays, you don't hear about anything over about 55# from year to year. I don't fish Tillamook anymore but, the last big fish I landed down there was 54# in the early 90s.
I saw a guy land a 55# buck on the Nehalem, in the 90s. He caught it on a fly that was basically yarn eggs. Now that would kick ass catching a 50pounder on a fly rod. :fishing:
