Haven't tried spearfishing yet, but yeah I dive for abalone. Haven't gone this year because they fucked us on or regs this year. We can't dive for abs before 8 AM after all the low tides are gone.

low tides don't always occur before 0800 in Northern California. There are several spots that I know of that you can't get abalone at low tide because there is too much of a kelp mat covering things up but at high tide when the kelp is standing up, there are lots of abalone. Keeping rock pickers off the beaches is a good thing, the Asians rape and pillage the abalone when all they can do is rock pick.

There are still not very many low tides after AM, even though there are some. A lot of the spots I dive at it has to be low tide, because they would be under 20+ feet of water if it wasn't. I really don't feel like passing out on the way to the surface and being found a few days later washed up on the beach, or not being found at all.

Wait. Tides rotate every 6 hours or so, and don't maintain an exact schedule. Are you trying to tell me that it's never low tide after 8 in the morning there?

Never heard of an abalone diver suffering from shallow water blackout. Usually occurs with free diver that dive quite deep and have good breath hold abilities and on the way to the surface the reduced partial pressure of O2 isn't sufficient.

Here on the east coast we have diurnal tides (two per 24 hour period) the west coast has one per 24 hour period.

Correction, east coast has semi-diurnal tides (two per 24 hour period) west coast has diurnal tides (one per 24 hour period) Gulf of Mexico has mixed semi -diurnal (more than one tidal change per day but not always two full tidal changes.

Not totally accurate, I knew a guy who died from a SWB (shallow water blackout) in relatively shallow water. While deeper descents certainly add to the probability of suffering a SWB it's not the only factor which could lead to one. As you pointed out the critical component of a SWB is the partial pressure of O2 in the blood, a long dive in even 30 feet of water could reduce the ppO2 in the blood enough to lead to unconsciousness.

Look at the minus tides from the 17th to the 21st of this month. Diving after 8 would be good if you prefer low tides.

I have personally seen shallow water blackout in a deep swimming pool. Student started in one corner and swam around the edge under water. Blacked out after 1 1/2 circuits coming up from the deep end (15ffw). He was pulled out and fortunately was OK. Just trying to be better than his instructor.

You sound knowledgable about this, so you know you don't juust swim to the bottom and come right back up. You go down, and search for abs. If you find a little spot with abs, you have to hang onto things so the current doesn't push you around, and all this others stuff that wastes oxygen.
