I am thinking a trolling motor for my 16x52 would be a nice thing to have.

Its a fairly heavy boat...do I need a 50 lb thrust trolling motor? Would it be best to mount it on the transom? I will do some fishing, but not a lot.

Any brands to avoid?

I bought a Minn Kota 55lb thrust last spring for my 1754. I am happy with the performance of it. I never had any issues with it not pulling the boat. I would not go any smaller though. I have a bow mount, foot control. That is the only style I have ever used. I would mount it wherever you usually fish from. If you fish from the back, mount it on the transom. Wherever its comfortable for you to run while fishing. I have a fishing deck I put in mine in the summer so that's why I use a bow mount. I purchased mine from Rogers as they seemed to have the best price.

I'm sure you haven't.

50 lb thrust isn't enough. First decide what voltage you want, 12, 24 or 36. Then decide how many batteries you want for your boat. Really need at least two. You going to use a charger or perko switch? With a Perko switch you can charge the trolling motor battery when the outboard motor is running. Don't run the trolling motor on both batteries.

I would go with the most thrust you can get in a 12 volt motor.
