Noticed some other guys that fish for shad on here so let's see some pics. They are starting to hit good here and I hope to get after them soon.

Right about now its usually hot. This year sucks so far. Might be the low water levels but I would think that would have just concentrated them in the holes.

I've never fished for them, only reason I know what they taste like is I usually get one or two from the fish market. There is a shad tournament a few miles from here every year. Might have to check it out.

I had no idea people fish for and eat shad. The shad fishing I've ever done was with a cast net and use them for bait, mostly threadfin and some gizzard. What kind do y'all eat and what do they taste like.

Do it. Their a blast to catch. Good fighting fish and when they are running good you can get into them like blues, almost every cast.

I never ate one. I do save a few to use as catfish bait.

There called American shad making them the most patriotic of the shad species. I don't normally keep them but I did try some once and because of how it was prepared it tasted like smoked salmon.

X2
It's tons of fun. I could tell you how many times we get double and triple hook ups. Normally catch 20 to 30 in a few hours but some times guys can catch 100 in a day.

Cool, will definitely try to get a few. Never heard of anyone getting into numbers like those, but have heard of people passing time with them on fly tackle when the salmon refuse to bite.

We use them for crab bait and sturgeon bait here. We get over a million in the Columbia river. I mean that's how many return each year. There were almost 2.5 million last year. They are the biggest fish in the herring family. They have more bones than most people can stand. The people that I've met who cook them pressure cook or can them to get rid of the bones. They stink about as bad as any fish I ever caught. But, when they're in, you can have a day of fun until your arm get tired.

The part about the bones reminded me of the story a native man told me about the creation of the shad.

One day, a porcupine came to the creator and asked if he could possibly be changed into something a little less miserable. The creator, annoyed with the ungrateful creature picked him up, flipped him inside out and tossed him into the river.

So was born the first shad.

I may have just allegedly boated a 15 lbs king salmon on 8 lb mono and a fucking trout rod! Of course it was promptly returned to the water because the season allegedly has not opened for salmon.;)
