Quick Trip

Since I spent the weekend before in LA hunting ducks, took my gal fishing this past Saturday, and also made a final scout for the duck opener. Bought 5 dz live shrimp and headed up the Spanish River from the causeway. The water in the main rivers was muddy from the recent rains, so we opted to fish a smaller tributary with clear water from the falling tide. This is old fashion cane pole fishing with live shrimp under a cork, and almost never disappoints this time of year. Had to move around a little to find'em, but it didn't take long. I poled Jen along while she drop fished structure along the edges of the channel, and we were soon anchored up on some old pilings, catching bass as quickly as we could bait the hook and drop it in the water. Caught 25-30 bass in short order, culling about half of them, and we soon had a nice stringer full of green gold. Spent the next hour or two scouting ducks, trying to get a handle on what our opener will be like on Thanksgiving morning. We have some birds here, but they are packed up in just a few areas, and the crowds will be thick. I've got an out of the way hole that I have opted to hunt, and our biggest issue will be not to shot more than our 1 each allotted Mottle duck, it is loaded with them. The good news is that there are some Mallards mixed in with them, so we will have to be very careful when squeezing the trigger on the opener, but will not have to fight the duck commander crowd.
