Preseason

We tried the doves last Saturday at my cousins place. Same field prep as last year but not near enough game. They left about a week before the season started. Tricia and I enjoyed the shade, but unfortunately she did not have any opportunities. We’ll be trying some goatweed next week one evening that I’ve located.

Got our first big rain in quite a while up here this evening. Was starting to get droughtish. Hopefully it’ll stay relatively dry for the rest of the rice and bean harvest. After the incredibly wet spring, they’ve earned an easy harvest.

Might go up to the lease on Saturday the 21st if it’s not too hot.

Glad to have my main squeeze back in action for its 16th season, it went down back around Christmas last year due to a failure in the magazine tube. Finished the season with my new Maxus, but I shoot the gold much better. Enjoyed a flawless round of sporting clays with it Labor Day weekend so I’m confident the repair job worked well. I replaced the magazine internals with sure cycle upgrade kit. Might replace the action system at some point in the future.

We’ve slipped into a pretty good drought up here. Got my seed in the ground right ahead of a thunderstorm today. ImageImage

Hopefully you'll get some showers with the fronts coming through next week.

Rode up to the lease today. Pretty dry up here, only reason road isn’t dusty is the shower they got Thursday. Nephew Colin came along with me, really trying to invest in him because nobody else in his family does.

Dry fall means lots of disking
Image
Cleaned up my atv spot in the shop and stored my goose decoys.
Image
Beans on both sides this year means cutting Johnson grass for brush.

Beans should get cut soon.

I prefer wet and cold. Ok with dry and cold or dry and warm. Wet and warm sucks wind.

I’m fine with cold and either as long as the cold is intense like the fall of 2012, 2013, and 2014.

2009 was good too, cold and wet.

Anything but last year

Cold and dry to our north. Cold and normally wet here.

With that said Ive read that it’s wet to our north so it needs to get cold early! Really cold!

Took nephew to the box stand this morning, saw 1 plump spike about 9 am but he didn’t present a shot, and we were targeting 1 of 3 nice deer I’ve had on camera. Spikes become targets later in season when the season has about a month left.

Plot does look nice. We haven’t even planted yet. Zero moisture.

Forecasts currently thinking your neck of the woods might see its first frost or light freeze late next week.

They are getting those out of the fields around here as well.

Hoping the frost coming on the earlier end gets vegetation browned sooner as well. Seems like too often things stay green (warm) into the season

Deer season started Saturday up here, on my 3 hunts so far I’ve seen several deer. I’m really enjoying being in the thick of them this year and waiting on one of the 2 I’m really after before shooting.

There's a sweet luxury. Any real chance I might have had has been sublet this year, so my couple of "deer hunts" have just been to have done so.

That one meat shot won't determine whether or not you get the big one you are looking for. In fact might be better to get that out of the way now so you can really concentrate on the horns.

They are in bachelor groups still, so I’m seeing mostly young bucks. The freezer levels are sustainable for a while longer. It’s a long season.

Rode up to the farm this afternoon to haul the bulk of the decoys to the pit. Went ahead and put them out, field was pumped in last few days. Saw a couple groups of ducks flush while driving in and a sunset speck flight.

Super convenient when the farm roads are dry, allows me to drive right to the pit
Image

My mass of pintail decoys with goose decoys mixed in northeast of pit
Image

Knot of teal on south sides with small scattered groups of spoons, gadwall, and mallards.
Image

Several more dozen decoys to put out but I really like how it looks so far.

Going for a very scattered look with some decoys up to 50-75 yards from pit.

Trying to replicate a field of scattered groups of birds with a few big masses to pull birds into pit during favorable wind days.

Love the shallow flood with the mud clods and bean stubble showing.

Next Saturday’s youth hunt will be first test. Also planning to not use spinners.

Really like that a lot, same approach I'm hoping to do on the bunkie field with the scattered dekes (including plenty out of range) and the mixed goose FBs and floaters.

Tuesday''s forecast weather would be an absolute must-go for me for a field hunt, but I've got a marsh hunt lined up given EZ will still be closed. Local met was talking frozen precip this morning for Tues, big arctic blast should do us all well.
