What Rick said. I remember the picks of an outing he had with you. I think he was sick and he looked frozen stiff. You guy's had some cold stuff up that way, and I don't know if that wasn't 2 years ago.

Then they rang up the Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, where the action seemed to be concentrated.

“Nearest we can figure is there’s something special about that lake in particular,” Huyck said. “The highest duck counts in the region tend to come from that site. There must be something that the ducks especially like.”

What could the ducks like at Rice Lake? I can't imagine what it could be.

https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Rice_Lake/about.html
a shallow, 3,600 acre wild rice-producing lake

Rice couldn't be the reason rice lake is of particular interest, could it?

I just found that comment funny about what could be especially attractive to ducks at Rice lake.

I would assume that the lake provides the food for the fowl naturally (timing) for the migration. Nature has a way of taking care of itself. Man does things out of greed or without regards of the possible consequences.

Too late. Much, much too late. The movie Idiocracy was so prophetic that it, quite literally, wasn't funny.

I love that movie and agree it is scary how prophetic it seems to be.

Looking through old hunting pictures get's me in the right frame of mind. This was taken in 2012 on or the day before Thanksgiving, and the memory of this hunt is still vivid in my mind. It was on a set-aside piece of rice property we leased from Ricks place (Doug)
The log for this year was on another site that is now defunct and I think I may have a copy of it on my home computer. I'm getting primed!

The camo (coats and bibs) in my closet are what I use. No way am I going to pay the outrageous pricing of today. I have camo from way back that I've patched and still use. Jeans and an old camo shirt under waders.

Should be a decent year, could be spotty due to a few storms. Only got out a couple times last year, but it was pretty solid.ImageImageImage

Glad to see your head in the right place, Dave. Heckuva haul there. What was the overall season like there for the 2012-2013 season? Funny that, to some at least, 2012 season seems like the "way back when".

I remember someone asking Phil Robinson what was his best duck hunt ever - he thought for a moment then said "it was before he found Jesus and that's all I am going to say".

I dug up the older logs from that defunct site and found that the picture is actually from the 2011-2012 season on 11/27. This was our first year in the rice and my first year back from my short stint as deer hunter. (long story) They are a bit scrambled from my copy and paste job, and I couldn't copy and paste them here so you'll have to read from the pictures.

The teal season that year was still 4 birds and they were thick for most hunts. The duck numbers fell off dramatically after that year and continued the decline up to the time we moved to the marsh 4 years ago. As the duck numbers fell the hunter numbers increased in the area substantially. I think Rick had something to do with this... :D

The end of the second split is missing. The original logs are on a computer that is stashed in a closet and I didn't have the gumption to pull it out and fire it up.
