SUN 1/5/20

We watched a few flights of GWT pass over the decoys that never wavered then birds started to trickle in. First a pair of greenheads that ended up being only mallards we shot at. A nice group of pintail broke from way they hey up and we killed our 3 easily. Worked several more groups so one of the hunters could photograph. He promises he will email, I'll post a few up. Mottles surprisingly came late and worked as mallards with a big swing and soft quacked them in tight. Ended with 8 different drake species out of our strap.

A great mallard show. Acted like new birds swinging tight and whiffing down to the kill hole. Racing each other. Hadnt shot into a group of mallards bigger than 4 all season. Today we shot several of 12+. Pintails came as big group and should have easily killed our 3. We shot one group of GWT early and a group of spoons not thinking we would see the flight that would come. They came as they have in past years.

Very still early. Not much moving and hardly anything finishing until the wind started making ripples in the pond. Then it was just like a switch was flipped. Birds worked great after that. Just ran out of time as we have a 10 am curfew. 4 Widgeon came in, all stayed. Did notice if I let up on the call I would lose the mallards. Nearly hail calling one drake until I called the shot at 20 yards. Whatever works.

Thur 1/9/20

A little of this a little of that. Sat at 17 for about an hour before killing #18 @9:30.

Fri 1/10/20

Was eerily devoid of ducks for the first 15 minutes then someone flipped the teal switch on. Maybe the high flight of teal Rick talked about in his log today, as we are south of Lulu's. Mega wads of 50+ in the deeks. Texted a fellow blind at 7:07 to let him know we were done.

15 GWT
1 BWT
2 pintail

18 ducks

Do agree. Was hoping second split would be better. It seldom is but I have seen it be the best part of the season. Hope it keeps up.

3 Guns

Had 6 ducks @ 9 AM. Not sure what stirred the pot but we started picking up singles and pairs quickly. Shot all 5 mallards within 20 minutes. Two doubles and a single. Pins came as a pair and a single. Only big group of teal left the decoys unshot. We did pick up 3/3 out of one mixed group of two GWT and one BWT. Young dog continues to impress by marking a greenhead that sailed out south to a cut grass patch. He came out 10 minutes later with a still very live bird.

First split, I was 5 of 6 on numbers. I haven't crunched numbers lately but I'm probably in top 2 for secomd split numbers and probably top for mallards.

Whole camp had great hunts the last 2 days. 18 limits two days in a row. If you would have asked me what kind of weather yields the most flight,I would have said SE with fog. Today that's what we had and six camp blinds had 20 ducks total. Shows what I know. I had 3. Greenhead and 2 GWT

Had 10 wed and 18 GWT yesterday. Today was a enough teal early and some really good shooting helped us put up a few bigger ducks. Bonus banded mottle duck to boot. We knocked a pair that fell within about 5 yards of each other about 35 yards out. Dog brought first back and hunter asked if it had jewelry. I showed him it didnt but I told him "next does"....wouldnt you know it.
