Headlights for a duck boat

There is more than one way to skin a cat.
You can do it the $4000 way or the $20 way.
I'm assacheap so I went the $20 way.

You can buy a LED bank of lights for your boat. It takes less power and they say it's brighter. I've never rode in a boat that had them. My whole rig costed $400 used from my father so putting lights on that cost that much would be sillier than chit. You can pay over $1000 for a headlights for your boat.

The reason to go with non-traditional lights (LED etc) is the power pull from the battery. Those lights that you have will drain a battery a whole heck of a lot faster than LEDs will. You also don't need to pay out the bum for those LED lights, you can make your own. There are instructions online on how to make a low draw light with those 7" round KC Daylighter style lights.


Also, personally, I hate the light that comes from LED lights. That crisp white/bluish light makes things harder for me to see.

My boat motor has a generator. If the motor is running my light don' t drain the battery. I need it that way because I camp. No lectricity at all. These lights work fine. I carry a coleman lantern to set up and signal people that I am in the hole. Leaving the porch light on saves a lot of trouble...

For me its too late; I now own a bad ass set of LED round lights, straight from Mr. Wong in China.

Acorn, where did you get that metal box for yours?

I want to see whats going on, I have aquired a nice reel of red LED lights for the interior of my boat. I need to get some navagation lights set up as well...

TK, maybe buy/use an old ammo box with the lid and one of the sides cut off. Should be just about right.

If this hunt happens, how many do you want? I have 30mm cans, 20mm cans, and various small arms cans. Tons of them. I use them for damn near everything.

They are waterproof, so I keep my tow straps in one, dog bumpers in another, in the back of my truck.

Metal box?
The front of my boat has a piece of plywood mounted on it. Another on the side you don't see is longer and is for the trolling motor to mount onto.

The box I made to protect my lights from branches is made from 3/4" plywood. I'm a carpenter. Everything I build starts out as wood. Maybe I'll make a metal one in the future but why?

Miss Brandy is hard on things....it is just a matter of course for me to make EVERYTHING in her life Brandy proof.

If I put her on a sand pile with an anvil, she would have it destroyed in an hour.

Maybe I am over thinking it and should just design up a box from wood and move on.

Here is how they work...
Notice the plug. For fishing I use that for the trolling motor. Boat came wired that way. My father is previous owner. He is a EE so I have to assume its wired for that. Works good for what I do. I use a handheld spotlight when I need to see to the sides.

My dad rigged the front-end like that. All I did was add the lights. You can see where I "tapped" a tree and dinged the front without breaking the plywood. It did get ripped loose. Had to use the next size bigger screws after I hammered it as straight as I could in the field.
