Thinking about repowering the boat

I came across a good deal on a 90 Yamaha 2 stroke but here is my dilemma l. My boat is only rated for a 60 but looking at this from a weight perspective a 4 stroke 60 weighs about 250 pounds and the 2 stroke 90 is listed at 261 pounds, so what do y'all think? Bad idea or what?

Go for it. Just beef up the transom a bit. My uncle has a 90hp on the back of a 16 foot mod-v. That thing is scary fast.

His is a flat bottom too, but it has the v nose on it. Don't know GPS speeds but with 3 guys and fishing gear I would guess close to 50mph.

I would be hesitant I've see what happens if you lose the gamble! The weight is not the only issue, torque of the motor can also crack the transom in the corners.

You would have to add a lot of support to the transom to handle the extra torque. And be easy on the throttle at take off and keep a lot of bow wight to help the boat track. As long as your sensible it will be safe.

You dont have any dilemma.

You want the motor, but you know its overpowered for your boat.

Sell that boat and get one thats rated for it.

Problem solved

Can't really argue with that logic.

We have just enough sense to stay alive. Then after that the ducks drive the decisions.

There have been days out in my hybrid where that common sense may have taken a back seat to a desire to kill ducks on that "perfect ducking day"

I'm not sensible so that wouldn't work for me.:)

If you do it, be respectful to the leo's that check you. You can get ticket for it, so don't give them a reason to search your boat for anything.

Or better yet, do yourself a favor and do the right thing from the beggining

Notice the if you do it, but where's the fun in that? Better yet, punch him in the back of the head when he goes to check and haul ass.

I'm always respectful to LEOs but I just don't understand the rules because the same size commercial boat could run whatever and I wouldn't be acting a fool anyway

I'm not always, if he's being a dick so am I. If he's being cool so am I. My favorite saying with them is I'm either taking an ass chewing or a ticket but not both. It usually results in a small argument and no ticket.

Just go to the junkyard and pull the plate from another boat thats rated for a 90 and you're good to go. It'll probably even increase the load capacity of the boat too.

Exactly. Or put a new lid on the motor, with the "appropriate" decals.

I vote for this. Screw anyone telling you how big of an outboard you can use on what size boat.

Exactly. Laws and regulations only serve to limit anyone from having a good time.

When I was a kid my dad would take us "turtle hunting" in his 14 food Jon boat. We would net a bunch of sun turtles then take them back to camp and let them race down the boat ramp. One weekend we had a ton of people up there and he ended up with 9 or 10 kids in that little boat. We were beached up in the reeds going after some turtles that were sitting on a log and a boat sheriff comes up behind us and asked what we were doing. My dad explained then proceeded to get his ass chewed out for being over the 3 person capacity limit and almost "flipping" a 4 foot wide flat bottom when 9 kids all ran to one side to net a turtle. He gave my dad a warning and told him to go back to camp and not do it any more. Now we just wait for him to go by at noon every day and then take our little cousins out turtle hunting.

i thought those ratings were required by the coast guard to let the buyer know what could safely be used. never heard of anyone getting in trouble for having a motor that was more than max HP.

There is a formula on the cost guard website that calculates max safe power. If you run the calculation I bet you get a higher hp rating than what your sticker states.

:fishing: We have random checks by our Fish and game. If you don't wash you boat, have the registration , all the safety equipment, more people then the rating, OR over powered for the boat, your not putting the boat in to the water!!!! :o

I didn't think coast guard could tell you how much power you can put on a boat, thought those were recommendations

Hmm, looks like it is a rule for anything under 20

Copterdoc probably can post a link to a sailboat forum that has a formula...
