Visqueen a layout boat?

reading djj's thread got me to thinking: would visqueening a layout be effective? has anyone ever tried it? i'd use it to sit way out from shore to get the wary birds. i think you could even secure it in a way that you appear to just be a gentle chop on the water. hmm...

That could be interesting. Supposedly you can get ducks to lite on it thinking its water, so why wouldn't it make you invisible in water?

That's a common trick for layout hunting open water. Clear visqueen over their painted layout to simulate water

MT...I'm convinced this is a sound theory. I've heard of many layout hunters on this coast doing it. Although I've never witnessed it.

My only experience with it is field hunting Aleutians. We covered our layout blinds in clear visqueen in a grass field. There we're other flooded low spots in this and the surrounding fields. I walked 50 yards from our set up and was quite impressed with its realism. Anyhow, the hunting wasn't great that day to begin with. But we did decoy in a couple groups. The first my idiot buddy blew by sitting up and shooting early without telling anyone. The second time the wind had picked up and our visqueen was flapping a bit behind us. This spooked the birds on their second pass. Haven't tried it since but I'm convince it could work

thanks Red. i have a perfect lake to try it out on if i had a layout boat. the birds don't like to get near shore, and they raft up, so i was thinking of paddling out a good ways with a few lines to attach to the sides of the boat with decoys clipped on to them, anchor the boat behind my head so i face downwind and see what i can do. ideally, there would be a bit of chop on the water to hide the line formation of the dekes and to give the appearance that the boat is just more water with the wavy visqueen attached.

Paint the boat a water pattern. Look at jehlers and the guns boats, or something like this

You use clear because water isn't black. The clear will blend your boat with the water, and reflect like the water around it. I think simulate waves too, I dunno. Google it, lol

That's what I was thinking. Painting a layout tan with the clear visqueen. I think it would blend in awesome to the sandy bottom shorelines I hunt.

Suppose it depends on how deep the water is where you are hunting too. 5ft, match the bottom. 50ft, do blues and Grays.
