What size prop?

Just ripped the shit out of my prop, so I need a new one. Have no idea what my old prop is and there isn't any way to tell any more. It's a late 1980s evenrude 40hp. I don't care about top speed, but I want to be able to get a heavy load up on plane. What size should I look at getting?

I would try a 15 pitch but check with your local outboard dealer. I ordered a 15 and a 17 for my Johnson 50 and the 15 is better top end. The 17 may be to much for a 40. Jehler would be a good source of info also.

X2
You can buy 3 or 4 referbished steel props for the price of 1 stainless. With your obsession of shooting Kentucky tuna your probably in a lot of shallow water. I would go cheep, you know it will happen again!:)

I'd stay with aluminum...much better to have your prop look like it does than to grenade your lower...stainless doesn't give like the aluminum does and you end up wrecking expensive parts.

Ok thanks. That's what I was thinking. The boat is only used for Bowfishing and duck hunting so I'm seldom in more than 5 FOW unless I'm in a river channel.

No it was supposed to be a joke about you abusing it in the rocks. Poorly done I guess.

I know it's hard to read, but it says 12 1/4 R 15 MWC
Does that mean it 12 1/4 diameter and 15 pitch?

Check iboats.com. They have some pretty good prices on props. You should be able to get a new one less than $90 shipped to your door. That's for a Solas aluminum, not a Michigan Wheel.

I wouldn't waste my time with a solas aluminum prop. Had one once, hit a 2 inch tree limb and bent it. Straightned it with a small piece of wood I found and my hands. Either I am a real bad ass or that shit is soft!

Just think of it as one big, 3-pronged shear pin.

Your probably a real bad ass. They definitely aren't the best prop. But duck hunting, which is what I primarily use my boat for, I am prone to hit something so I just buy a cheaper one that way it isn't so painful when it comes time to buy a new one. I like Assa's analogy. It's a three pronged shear pin.

The old prop I had was from Michigan wheel, but it was discontinued. I believe this is their replacement prop for it. Same OEM #, but a different part number. Same diameter and pitch, 13 tooth and through hub exhaust. Looks like I found what I was looking for. I figured it was going to be close to $150 so I'm happy.

Buy it. Most of the one's I've seen like that are around $120 if I remember right.

Already did. I was surprised at the price too... Figured it was refurbished, but it was brand new in the package.
