My motor is a 15-horse Evinrude. Outboards in general are all similar.

Now use a flat screwdriver to loosen this screw.

Had to take screw all the way out. The shaft has a keyway where the threads are.
This is the water pump.

Taking a break. Will come back and open up the water pump and take a look later. Will also blow compressed air thru the motor and pickup tube. BRB.

By the way guys. I never would pay to have this done yet people do. It used to be a $60 repair but these days I bet its $100-$150.
Keep a spare impeller, one or two wrenches the right size, the right screwdriver and it WILL save the day once. Guaranteed.
Keep a spare fuel pump, squeeze bulb, and a prop along with the right tools.
There are no recue boats where I go. Cell service? Maybe. You gotta be ready to save yourself.

So far, one 3/8" combination wrench and a flat screwdriver is all I need to put this in.

Sometimes the key falls out when you take off the housing.
Be ready for it.
Lose it and youre fucked.

Be real careful taking this off.
Slide it gently past the splines.

Impeller is in there. Sometimes it gets stuck at bottom but this time the pin fell out so the whole assembly came off.

New next to old. Am swapping but will save old one as an emergency backup.

Now slide new impeller on. Match the little keyway with the key.

When you put the cover back you have to turn it as you put it on so the impeller will fit.
I turned it anti clockwise.
Put bolts back in and tighten.

When you get here is tricky. You have to match up the pickup tube, shift lever, and the long shaft into thr right plave. If you habe troubke, it is probably the splines at top. Try pulling the rope a teeny bit and shazam, it pops in place to get that first bolt in. Once you get past this. Home sweet home...

Now use needle nose plyers to get the bolt for gear shift linkage started.

Oyeah!!!
That bolt is tricky.

If I did everything right putting motor in reverse will pull it all together. Yup!
Now all thats left is putting the six bolts in that hold lower unit on.
Its an easy repair and every duck hunter who has a boat should be doing it themselves.

Nice job betty but you put the impeller in ass backwards, you turn the driveshaft clockwise to install.

Pull your starter and see what way the flywheel spins. Sooooo now you get to do it again.

Also, very important, you forgot to mention grease the driveshaft splines with moly lube, or you may not be able to get it apart next time.

I'm an amateur and was hoping a pro would chirp in some pointers. Thanks!

You might as well do this after every season when you winterize your motor. I change the impeller then new lube. Cheap easy maintenance that can help keep your motor running for decades! Good advise fellas

Either the fans folded the right way or it works with them backwards.
I left it the way it was and the motor pees strong so I'm leaving it.

Yea most of the time they will fold over but it can be hard on them. You will be fine.
