My first duck boat

Thought I'd start a build thread about this, ever since I started duck hunting I've had to rely on friends with boats to take me with them most places when the kayak wasn't an option. Last week I ran across this steal of a deal on Craigslist and drove 7 hours round trip to pick up this 1992 lowe 1642 mod-v Jon boat on a trailer for $600. I got some plans to mod it out and make a duck boat out of it. Got my buddy's 16 hp go devil long tail strapped on right now but I'm in the market for a 25 hp tiller steer outboard. Hopefully ill get some Christmas money and this week plan to install sharkeye nav lights, an LED bar and bilge pump with Ollys help while he's here for Christmas. Here's a few pics including my home made bark stencil that I threw over the existing paint job.

Threw some flex seal
Over these transom leaks for the time being, I plan to get it to a welder once season is over to tack it shut and weld a new sleeve for the plug in, possibly a frame for a front deck bc this boats gona be a hunt/fish combo. Also already had to hammer 8 leaking rivets back down.

Here's my stencil in the making
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1387915177.192740.jpg

And I like the look of it.

The paint job on it was just the grass part of a max4 stencil over olive drab, I'm going to do the bark over the inside of the boat too, and hydroturf on the floor. More to come on this build.

Congratulations! I just bought an old, already camo 13.5' Gregor yesterday. Came with a 25 and a 6hp, both of which are getting the once-over in the shop right now. My first duck boat, as well. Got some blind ideas to implement by the new year....

Upgrade the fuel lines to the newer single line. Takes a few parts but is easier

Haven't even gotten a look at the motor, its gona be my temp when i get it running if the go devil finds a new boat. the boat already has single fuel line run from the front. But there's nothing to hold the gas tank up there. And I haven't really decided on how my front deck is gonna be.

It's already on the list he's gonna need to get that old motor turning again.

I've found an engine. A 2000 mercury 15 hp 4 stroke. A friend of mine bought a new boat and this was on the boat already. In gona give him back his 16 hp go devil long tail and mount that to mine. He's giving me a good deal on it so ill run that for a while til I find a 25 horse. It runs an all welded xpress 15 footer at 22 mph so I'm hopin my lightweight riveted boat will run a little faster with it altho 22 will be plenty fast for my use. More to come once I get it mounted up and take it for a spin tomorrow.

Looks good on there, weather is super nasty today so I didn't take it out and run it.
The. I discovered this.

So it's off to the welder in the morning.
Probly gona have them cover the live well hole too.

Have them weld a triangle in there, or you will end up with that problem again.

There's already one there... Another one? Please explain I want this done right the first time.

Yes. I had that same thing happen on my bass tracker I bought. Had it welded back and in one season it was back the way it was. But I also had a 40hp with no transom saver and really rough roads.
I still haven't fixed it, but when I do I'm going to have something extra welded on. I think an extra triangle over the crack would help. it would disperse the stress on the motor over 2 welds instead of one. In my head at least, that would make it 2X as strong. Maybe talk with someone at the welding shop and see what they have to say.
Also, get a transom saver. That should help a ton.

When I get mine rewelded, I think I'm going to have something like this done.

The second picture makes sense. Wonder if that works. My buddy who I got the motor off of had to trim his transom brace down at the top to fit his go devil back on. It went from his 1436 to my boat to his new xpress all welded 1546. I don't think notching the top is gona hurt his transom though. Took a pic bc I though it was funny to see him taking the angle grinder to his new boat.

You've got the right idea. Without seeing the boat, I can't tell the best place to locate the gusset. But if I had to guess, I'd go flush with the top.

I'm pretty sure you would end up with a molten pool of aluminum instead of a welded boat trying to use your welder on it. I'm picturing "ok, here it goes *zap* Woa, where did the boat go???"
