Preseason

Preseason

Postby Ericdc » Mon Aug 17, 2020 2:04 pm

Have a few dove options located for September, including the sunflowers my buddy and I planted and a large clearcut that I cut last year that's covered in goatweed. Did see some birds in the goatweed last week while riding through checking dozer work.

Looking colorful in IOWA, not too mad about that. Though last few years it has seemed that the map's been colorful all summer only to end up color-less in all the wrong places when fall gets going in earnest.

But for now:

I think I was subconsciously wishing it to be MO, instead of Iowa, hoping that habitat flats would be Mud Flats.

and I just came back from a day trip to NE a week ago! The river that makes the Iowa/NE border didn't seem flooded like it was last year when I went up that way in early fall.

Look at all that color in Missouri Darren.

On a serious note, I hear Colorado in bad shape with a big fire.

Central and west TX could sure use a tropical system's rainfall. Watching model runs closely, driving me nuts. Going to be more interesting than I'd want the next few days.

I too figured there’d be a flurry of posts this evening but I have to imagine everyone was and may still be scurrying around filling pits and battening down the hatches for the incoming “September gales” as my old country neighbor used to refer to them as.

As for me I ran around a lot but didn’t get much done. Sprayed 7 acres of dove field to knock it back so I can burn next weekend. Half inch rain two hours later undid all of that.

We spent the day taking as much as we could from the camp and have a few items I now regret we didn't. If Laura comes in where and with the intensity as is now being forecast we will no doubt have nothing but a cement slab and a few I-beam left standing....... I give up.

Hate to hear that as well Dave but as often as these tracks have changed it wouldn’t surprise me if Laura hits Mexico.

Nothing like some storms to take my mind squarely off the fun of teal prep. Things are looking better for me today, thankfully, but not without at least 3-4 ft of surge over on my marshes.

With the latest tracks forecast for Laura, though, I feel for those on at the southwestern corner of the state, hope it keeps heading further and further west.

Well, not to compare to the coast but north Louisiana hasn't seen anything like this before to my knowledge. We'll be out of power for days. House is fine. My parents house south of DeRidder was spared but some of the neighbors weren't so fortunate. I've never seen a hurricane warning up here. Laura didn't lose much steam till at least I 20.Image

I couldn’t believe how long it held out as a hurricane. Got a few pictures from my friend in lake Charles. Looks like his neighborhood was lucky comparatively speaking.

Parts of Quitman and Jonesboro area are getting power back, so it might be earlier than the September 3rd estimate.

Got our power back on Monday evening.

Currently watching college gameday on ESPN before we head out for doves this afternoon. Today feels somewhat normal for the first Saturday of September and I'm trying to soak it all in. Hopefully we'll a decent pile of birds this afternoon , should be 5 or 6 of us out there, and I'm hoping we'll kill at least 50.

Really don't know what teal season will hold, so I've been scouting out places to dove hunt if we aren't able to do much for teal season. I do have a big 140 acre clearcut that's covered in goatweed secured for all of September. Probably going to try it Monday morning and avoid the mid 90 degree temps that afternoon.

Looks like we will have a nice cold front hit Wednesday with highs in the 70's for my birthday Thursday. Should push a bunch of teal down in time for the opener, if we are able to find a place to go.

For now, I'll be in the piney woods version of a sunflower field. Image
