Preseason

Headed to the marsh in the morning with Blake to get the decoys out and brush the blind. We'll try to catch a few shrimp and crab in the afternoon. If I have wi-fi down there I'll post a few pictures and comments. Not sure if I'll be able to coax anything into our saltwater reservoir or not, but we'll try.

After a long, long wait Blake finally got his bufflehead pair back. We had pretty much given up hope. It's a long story. Below the picture is the log for that day.

20210928_180705.jpg

11/20/2016

Weather - Clear- Light north east wind to start, getting a little stronger later in the morning....temp low 50's upper 40's?

Myself, Blake and Bennett

Birds- 14 - 1 Green Wing 3 gadwall 1 mallard hen 1 pintail drake 6 shoveler 2 Bufflehead (pair)

Seems we can pull a few shoveler from every working bunch but other species seem to make some barrels crooked. The green wing seemed to have moved a bit east, as evident from the straps out that way, but we did have a few flybys. Saw a few more grays this morning, and the scaup and spoonbill were active, passing on a lot of those. We did have many missed opportunity's on dabblers of many species to reach the limits, but one or two ducks a flock ain't gonna get you there. We had a wonderful weekend!

Blake scratched another species from his list this morning, taking a pair of Buffelhead for the wall. They are headed to the taxidermist..... They came in together.

Another first this morning, according to Bennett my cousin, was his first pintail drake. I hunted with him a a lot in our younger years and I can't remember him ever taking one, either. This one is going to be remembered by a couple of photos, and it's on the menu for next weekend.

They appear very nicely done, and you're not likely to see another mount like it in our corner of the world. What taxidermist?

Looks like some great work!

If anyone else wants a buffle pair, just holler at me during the season and I'll point you to all the law will allow.

It'll sit in the duck marsh for hunting, but I will pull it out and use it for fishing if the location calls for it. I'll also do some freshwater bass fishing in the spring during the spawn. We have an XPRESS 20' (XP200) with a 150 on hand for our fishing down there.

It is a prodrive motor.

We will. The go-devil's okay but this is a little less work when maneuvering at slow speeds and turning. Crab traps, decoys, etc. We're going to see how the weight difference affects our push pole ability. The go devil bateau is very light.

You’ll have fun with that! Soft bottom mud stands no chance.
Looks like an older model PD boat too. The are stout if that’s what it is.

It is, and it's solid. The price was right compared to new rig pricing today. The new 40HP PD cost alone is the same as what I paid for this entire rig. It'll do. If need be, I can always throw a new 40HP on the back.

Good looking rig, from the looks of it I would say it was used in fresh water, does not have the rust a salt or brackish water environment would have - I am speaking from experience.

I had noticed that as well and it was a big plus. I had researched and found a product a few years ago that I am very pleased with. It stays tacky but it's better than the alternative. The go devil is coated and gets recoated in this stuff and it's in good shape. Things not protected down there don't last very long. The underside of my travel trailer, axles and rims and other metal exposed areas are coated in this stuff. So far I'm impressed.

When I was a kid, the first thing I looked at in Field and Stream magazine was Tap's Tips. Simple, and practical tips for the outdoorsman. When the Outdoor Life magazine arrived, first look was always "This happened to me"

LWFC allocates waterfowl breeding grounds funding to Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) voted Thursday (Oct. 7) to allocate Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) dedicated funding for development and preservation of migratory waterfowl breeding grounds to Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl for three years.

Since 1965, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has provided funding to support conservation of breeding-grounds habitat for migratory waterfowl and by statute allocates a portion of annual hunting license revenue for that purpose.

Ducks Unlimited will receive 75% and Delta Waterfowl 25% of the allocation in each of three consecutive fiscal years, including 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24, that is to be used for protecting, restoring and enhancing breeding habitat for migratory waterfowl.

In response to a Commission RFP in June, proposals were presented to the Commission in August by Delta Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited. Each group was seeking funding that comes from 10 percent of LDWF hunting license sales.
In the last three years, an average of $270,000 annually has been awarded for the protection, restoration and enhancement of breeding waterfowl habitat.
