I rip out their still beating heart and show it to them before they die! Then I slice open the stomach and spin the deer around in the air until all the guts are out. Cut off the hunks of meat I want and throw it in a pan and eat. Real men aren't afraid to get a little hair in their mouth. The rest goes in the freezer until I decide to hack another hunk off. Pussies!

This. You don't need the skin. It will tack up in no time at all, and then it's impervious.

Oh, and DO NOT rinse it off with water. Just gut, skin, and hang, and let nature work.

Yep, that's what hanging them is all about. Controlled decomposition.

He gets taxed on it.

I rinse and pat dry with paper towels. Everyone does things differently.

Because it tends to wash off the good bacteria and promote either no bacteria or bad ones. I will rinse a spot here or there sometimes, if I have a lot of leaves or grass stuck to it, but very little.

Skinning a deer after it hangs for even a day takes at least 4 times as long as doing it green.

Ever try pulling the skin off with a truck or winch? Works great, quick and easy.

I honestly don't know if it is true but, I have heard the indians used to wait for the hide to slip before they removed it. I tend to believe at least some did. I've heard the story from indians too. The idea is the amino acids work on the meat better and insects don't get involved with the process.

I did that golf ball thing with the Jeep last year. And it worked pretty quick, but the prep time (cutting the legs, the neck, etc) I think it was a wash. It only takes me about 3 minutes to skin it.

I could see this, too. I think it's that "in between" time that makes it tough. I've tried it with the skin on a couple times, and when I skinned it after about 4 days, it was a bitch to get it off. Like it had been "glued" to the meat. When I skin them right away, that "glue" is what makes the tack, and the bugs can't get to it. It does the same thing as the hide, but it's far easier to peel it off when butchering. If it's in the 50s, it's plenty cold. I've been doing it this way for about 30 years, and never had a problem with spoilage of any sort. Try it sometime- skin it, then go back in about an hour or so. The deer will feel like it's been plasti-dipped in clear coat or something.
