DnB's 2013 Deer Hunting Trip

My pops and I both drew tags for California's zone X3b. Although California does not have the best reputation of producing big bucks, we are going to a secret family hunting ground that almost guarantees a decent buck, and has a history of large bucks being taken by members of my family. I said last year I was going antelope hunting in Wyoming this year, but we decided to buy more antelope points and buy Wyoming deer points as well, to make it an even more awesome hunt. So now we can focus on whacking a big buck in California, while they still exist.

I definitely would have held out for bigger.

Jerry, this buck hangs with probably close to 75 other mounts in a small town hardware/general store, you and I could easily spend an hour looking all the animals. They have an elk that he told me was taken by his wifes grandfather the first year Oregon issued elk tags, think he said 1936. A big 6x7 that I would guess to be around 360-375.

Places like that are cool. That 39 1/2" spread is damn impressive, of all the monster mule deer I've seen, 34-36" has been my biggest guesstimate.

They also had a forked horn muley that was around 28" wide with the forks being about 12" - 14" deep. Really cool rack.

I think the store owner said it was out east in the desert. There is 2 in the store that wide, but this one was heavier.

I've heard stories of one of my relatives (I think it was my grandpas uncle or great uncle) shooting a giant mule deer near the Oregon border with 28 points on one side and 32 points on the other. My grandpa was born in the 1930s so that means the deer was killed anywhere from the late 1800's, to the late 1910's. I believe this story too, because my dad said he saw the rack when he was about 14, but he does not know who has it now.

Forgot to mention, we will be stopping by some ducking spots after we kill 2 deer, so we are bringing the lab into the mountains with us. We are buying her a dog backpack so she can carry her own food.

Forgot to bring the camera, so no pics, my dad killed a 4x3 that was 22"wide by 19"tall. We did not go duck hunting because I didn't kill anything. I missed a forked horn at 350 yards B/C I was shivering (25 degrees only a sweatshirt, no jacket) and I was shooting off my knee.
