You'll never forget your first dink

Seems awful hot for deer hunting. I'd get that sucker in ice!

Was he quartering to you or away from you? Either way, nice shot. Nothing like that "thwack" when the arrow smacks some deer.

He's been hanging since saturday mid-day, it was 38* when we got up to hunt yesterday morning.

It was pretty much a perfect broadside, clean pass through double-lung (high double lung). I ranged him at 30, while I was nocking the arrow he took a couple steps and my buddy said "hes 35", I shot for 35 and the arrow punched right where my 30 pin was. Ended up hitting him about 3 inches high from where I wanted, but he's dead so its all good.

Oh, looked like it went in or out of his neck, and in or out of a lung. What's up with the neck in the pic?

That pic was after we rolled the guts. The neck cut was to let the wind pipe slide out.

Congrats on the buck!! I am still waiting on a buck with a big rack, most of the deer I have shot have been around that size.

Whats the matter? Cant use that "next year" joke with one this small?

I'm actually perfectly happy with him considering its my first deer, on top of the fact I wanted my first deer kill with a bow.

Congrats! Like they say, "you'll never forget your first."
I like the baler twine for the tag. We use that stuff for anything you can think of too.

Yum! I agree. The liver is the first thing I eat from every animal I kill.
The heart is the second thing.

How you cook it?

Fried in onions. Better to cook the onions some first to carmelize them before you start the liver, so you don't overcook the liver.
Also, something alot of people don't do that makes a big difference in the quality of the liver, take the thin membrane off the outside of the liver and rinse(the liver) prior to cooking.

Na still would have been small next year. Don't worry I've shot my share of small ones. And I my boys will get to shoot small ones if they want for their first deer. Nothing wrong with working your way up. Good job to take the first with a bow .

In a garbage can.

I keep mine for the dog, though. Along with the kidneys.

Mule deer, first year buck. To get into the high class bucks that everybody thinks of when they hear "Mule deer" I would have had to draw a tag and headed over to eastern oregon in the desert. Don't get me wrong, there are good bucks in the area I was hunting, but not like out in the draw areas. This one was shot where I know for a fact that a 28"er was killed last rifle season.

And for the liver..... I'm not a "gut-eater", I leave dat chit inda woods for the coyotes and turkey vultures to fight over. For you guys that enjoy liver, you do know its purpose in the body, right?

Exactly. Someone please explain to me how eating a poison filter can be "healthy".

As for mule deer, it was just a guess, based off of the HUGE ears.
