Teal Season - 2021

Date: Saturday, Sept 11, 2021

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 73 degrees with a 5 - 10 mph ENE wind, clear

We got to the blind about 10 minutes late, one of our members boat killed shortly after leaving the boat landing and we had to drop them off at their blind. When we were setting our the mojo's (3) we could hear shooting all around us. Once in the blind we saw plenty teal moving but most were high, and acted like bad children - would not listen to what I was telling them. Once the sun came up the teal came to the mojos, we never had more than 4 teal at a time come in - we had our limit by 7:45.
By the way we hunted the #3 blind that looked so bad, with little or no cover.

First time I can remember no mosquitos - did not have 1 bite and with no insect repellant

Totals: 11 - Bluewing teal, 1 - Greenwing teal

Hunters: Buddy and I with Abby

Temp: 73 degrees, wind 10 mph, NNE, clear

Another comfortable morning in the blind because of the wind.
Did not see as many teal today as yesterday, but the ones that came in came to the mojos, easy morning for Abby, all close retrieves. Again today no one wanted the #3 blind so Buddy and I took it again, we were the only blind to get our limit.
The small amount of grass we have in the marsh we are saving for the regular season to brush the blinds.
Worried about Tropical Storm Nicholas with the rain they are predicting.

Totals: 12 - Bluewing teal

Hunters: Buddy and I -left Abby at home with the high water was afraid of gators

Temp: 75 degrees, mostly cloudy, wind NE 5 - 10 mph

We had more wind than was forecast which made the morning more comfortable. As I had expected with all the rain the teal were gone. We only had 6 singles come into range, luckily we shot well. All 6 came to the robos. We were high blind with only 6 teal. I am glad I left Abby at home saw too many gators, and we were able to find all the teal.

Total - 6 bluewing teal

Hunters: Buddy and I

Temp: Again 75 degrees with little wind - did not matter which direction

Saw fewer teal than the day before, water still waaaay too high, and it is not going down. Some clouds early to clearing, got hot fast with little to no wind. 5 teal came early flying just out of range, I gave them a little peep and they made the turn coming to the mojo, we were able to drop 3 (me 2 - Buddy 1). Had another pair come by and Buddy could not find his safety, I got both of them, then a single came on Buddy's side, he shot 3 times missed and I was able to get him with 1 shot, I reminded him of that all day. That was it no other teal came by. Again our 6 teal was high blind.

Total - 6 bluewing teal

Date: Sunday, Sept 19, 2021

Hunters: Buddy and I

Temp: 75 degrees, I few clouds early then sunny. Wind was North, east, North then back to east 5 mph early to about 1 after 8:00

Just when you think it can't get worse it does. Saw next to nothing flying. Buddy and I are the only 2 to hunt - the 5 other guys in the camp decided early Saturday night they would rather drink than hunt for Sunday, they were the smart ones. Buddy and I each shot twice on Sunday and got 1 teal each. I should have shells to start the regular duck season.

Total - 2 bluewing teal - again we were high blind, but we were the only blind to hunt.

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 64 degrees, wind mostly east 5 mph - did not get as cold as forecast

Not many hunters in the marsh, and the refuge is only open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We did see some high flying flights but very few teal came to play. We had a flock of 12 Pintail almost land in the decoys, they circled twice then came on in. I was hoping the front would have brought more teal in. Opening weekend was good, but after that not much. Larry has hunted 4 days prior to this one at his hunting place in central LA, only shot 1 time in the four days - I was hoping we would have better luck.

Totals - 2 - bluewing teal, 1 greenwing teal

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 64 degrees, wind NE, 2 mph, changing to N, 8 mph, then back to NE

There were more hunters in the marsh today, heard more shooting south of us than we have been hearing, but still no ducks in our area. Again saw high flights, but nothing breaking to our calls. Larry shot a little better today with our limited opportunities. A group of hunters from another club that hunt just west of us picked up their boats and did not hunt on Sunday.
Abby had an easy day, the few ducks we killed fell dead in the decoys.

Total - 4 bluewing teal

Sunday, Sept 26, 2021 - last day teal season

Hunters: Larry and I with Abby

Temp: 68 degrees, wind E 3 - 5 mph

Same old story, saw some high flights but very few teal within shooting range. We are seeing more large ducks, Pintail and Gadwall, hope they are still here for the regular season. Abby made 2 good retrieves in the grass on teal with only a broken wing, both birds were moving quickly in the grass. Sorry to see the teal season end, but very disappointed in teal we had.
Next hunt Nov 6, with 2 grandsons and me ( I am a veteran and can hunt)

Total - 3 - bluewing teal, 1 - greenwing teal

Way to grind it out till the end, least you got to shoot a few times each day.

Got more blind work efforts coming up?
