Date: 9/11/21 (opening day of teal season)

Time: finished about 8:30

Location: marsh

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: very light and variable

Temperature: comfortable

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: hunted with my waterfowling mentor for first time since January of 2019.

Waterfowl Activity: slow then cranked up between 7-8 but we only shot at 1s, 2s, and 3s.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: they would not respond to any calling. If they didn't come first pass they weren't coming... kinda weird

Hunters: Kevin jason Landon and I

Guns:

Malfunctions: we shot at 25 birds and hit 24.

Dog(s): Kevin's dog

Special Equipment: lots of spinners

Kudos: we were able to take turns and enjoyed a pleasant hunt on a pleasant morning.

curses: 2 of the 3 blinds limited, hated it for my brother and buddy who only got 1.

Birds By Species: 24 blue winged teal

Photo Ops:

Date: 9/12/21

Time: finished at 7

Location: same blind as yesterday

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: light to decent ENE

Temperature: comfortable, low 70's. More mosquitoes

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: teal seemed to decoy better today, especially once sun got up

Waterfowl Activity: first 15 minutes or so was slow but picked up real quick around sunrise

Waterfowl Responsiveness: finally got a big bunch in right

Hunters: Kevin and I

Guns: his SX4 he bought this summer and my beretta I bought last October

Malfunctions: I missed 1 shot

Dog(s): Kate did well

Special Equipment: lots of spinners (teal were bumping off them hard before sun got on them)

Kudos: got our last 5 out of a big bunch

curses: only 2 of us, but that's ok.

Birds By Species: 12 blue winged teal

Preseason

Postby Ericdc » Sat Sep 18, 2021 7:45 am

Fogged in bad on the dove hunt this morning. Going to give it until 9 then head home. They aren't moving. Cool enough to bring Amos though and he's happy to be out and about.

Date: 9/24/21

Time: left at 9:30ish

Location: marsh

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: dead calm to light ENE

Temperature: comfortable

Barometer:

Moon phase: big

Special Notes: pleasant morning with good folks

Waterfowl Activity: not a lot but enough for a decent hunt.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: some bought in but most didn't

Hunters: corey, jared, Chad, Eric

Guns:

Malfunctions: none

Dog(s): Boone

Special Equipment: 4 spinners. I had my 2 off or running intermittently all morning

Kudos: we shot really well, got 6 out of last bunch and that group stayed mainly on east side as they decoyed, or I believe we'd have gotten 8-10 because 2 of us on west side only shot once.

curses: none really

Birds By Species: 1 green winged teal 14 blue winged teal

Date: 9/25/21

Time: picked up at 10 am

Location: just west of yesterday

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: calm to decent NE by 8

Temperature: very nice

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: we missed 2 teal

Waterfowl Activity: pretty slow but what came, came pretty

Waterfowl Responsiveness: I Rick Hall'd a group of 4 high flyers and broke the lead bird all the way to the water. Wish the others had followed. Ducks worked pretty today

Hunters: Corey Ryan Andrew Eric

Guns:

Malfunctions: none

Dog(s): goose

Special Equipment: 7 spinners running intermittently

Kudos: good way to close it out for our group

curses: none really but a bird came through decoys while I was taking a leak and 7 shots later it was still alive, so I got to pick on the guys.

Birds By Species: 18 blue winged teal

That's why I said none really. We only missed 2 teal all morning. Kept hoping for that big bunch to come and let us finish once we got to needing 8, but only saw a few decent sized groups.

The couple groups of 3 or 4 that did it right and made big downwind banks with the sun on their backs was really pretty though.

Thinking maybe an indicator of the poor hatch was possibly why we didn't see many good sized groups this year?

Another added note. First time I've hunted with both brothers in same blind since September 2019.

Date: 10/9/21

Time: got here right at sunrise, left at 10:20

Location: clearcut I managed southwest of Jonesboro with good goatweed

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: calm to light and variable

Temperature: 60's, pretty warm in direct sun though

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: probably my last hunt until Kansas trip at end of month

Waterfowl Activity: doves were on the ground early, made a round flushing them then sat at perch tree waiting on their return.

Waterfowl Responsiveness:

Hunters: just me

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): Amos

Special Equipment:

Kudos: Amos locates birds in deep cover very well.

curses: birds got on ground earlier than I planned for, and not my best shooting performance

Birds By Species: 4 mourning doves, should have been at least 8. Will add to jambalaya pot later today.
