Crab grass took over my browntop. If I can ever get it to stop raining I’ll get it mowed and burned. But it’s rained 3 times a week for over a month now. So I’m likely sitting Saturday out unless I get a call about a good shoot somewhere.

Doesn't open until the 10th down here, and hoping we have some birds.

He's starting to show his age but he still gets excited when we go hunting, whether it's squirrel or dove. He doesn't get to go on many September dove hunts because of the heat but the cloudy cooler weather will allow him to go with us again in the morning.

He'll be more valuable tomorrow sniffing the doves out of thicker goatweed cover.

Date: 9/5/2022

Time: morning hunt turned into a scout for afternoon hunt due to heavy fog. Came back at 2:30

Location: clearcut east of Dodson

Cloud Cover: partly

Wind Direction and Velocity:light breeze

Temperature: upper 80's

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: slightest weather changes and dove flight changes.

Waterfowl Activity: when I got there, there were 100 birds in one concentrated spot right on side of the road and probably another 50 in other areas.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: found a spot they liked to fly over and it proved to be right place to be.

Hunters: me and buddy Spencer got there around 4.

Guns: Spencer shot Tricia's pink browning 20 gauge.

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: 4 dove decoys

Kudos: shot better than I did Saturday

curses: big heavy cloud bank to the west, and associated breeze felt nice, but slowed the dove flight way down from 4:00 to when we left at 6:30.

Birds By Species:
Eric 10 mourning doves
Spencer 4 mourning doves

Photo Ops:

Tricia was taking picture of sun trying to break through fog while Amos was drinking water off bucket.

Afternoon setup and birds.

I’ve never used dove “full bodies”. Did you have any decoy and try to land on that tree?

They work really well in a clearcut setting with lots of goatweed and hardwood whips. I shot 4 out of tree next to this one and had several swoop by.

I've never had much luck with the dove mojos or decoys in a grain field setup.

I don't have any dove mojos anymore but I've had birds decoy really well to them in goatweed. It's fun to watch doves work in from up high like ducks when are are where they want to be.

Congrats on killing some birds! I haven't heard of a banded dove being killed in this area since I was a kid, and good to know that it is still being done.

Hot dog what a shoot! You waited longer than most would’ve, especially on a clear day.

He's battling some skin issues right now and is going to the vet in the morning. Also, no water source out there and I was going to check loggers after the hunt.

Hopefully we can get him back 100% for squirrels later this winter.

He's licked himself raw in a few places, has always struggled with allergies. Hopefully vet can get him on the mend.

When I was a dove shooter the birds I got were stuffed full of hemp seeds because in the 1940s it was a thing and there is still carryover along the ICG Railroad tracks.

Hate to hear that! Good call on keeping him out of the fall allergens that I’m sure were aplenty out there.
