I drove down to the camp yesterday evening to check on things and stayed the night. The tide was as it should be late yesterday evening for this one roadside spot we fish and I had a blast. I took my limit of 5 in a hurry and left them biting.

think it's bad here? The story notes that whole Eagle Lake, TX region thing, talk about a massive shift/change there. Used to always here about the snows over there, and now totally different, and claiming that population shifted NE to AR?? Maybe some, sure. And some spread into the still-fewer LA wintering numbers.

Had to chuckle at the quote about shooting "tasty mallards." They may be pretty, but didn't know they were revered for their tablefare, particularly in comparison to some others.

Nice roadside fishing spot DC, and even though I just ate lunch, your pic of the fried fish made me hungry again!!!!!!!

I do know that there are a lot of snows that pass through southern Illinois. I don't think that happened much 20 years ago. Even specks are increasing numbers as I understand it. That's hundreds of miles from me, so take it with a grain of salt. But my impression is consistent with a big push towards the east. Even where I'm at, snows and specks were nonexistant 20 years ago. If you saw 1 it was a big deal. Now I see a few snows around most years and not unusual to see flocks passing over at least once. Even specks on occasion, but that's still pretty random.

Over 20 years, a population growing by just 3% per year nearly doubles and one that declines by 3% per year is cut almost in half. It doesn't take much of year over year difference to add up to a huge shift in just 20 years.

I can confirm their speck and snow claims about population shifting to east and northeast Arkansas. Just about can’t hear myself think some days.

I saw your wing survey you posted earlier. I got asked for the first time to do that. Now I have to make sure I get some birds. Hopefully I get enough to make this interesting.

I enjoyed it. I got in the habit of checking for good wings and making sure I didn't pluck near the wing area before I took it. I'll probably catch myself doing that this season for no reason.

Those of you who may know of the famous Booth's grocery store in Grand Chenier, the owner, Mrs. T-Mae Booth passed away early this morning at the age of 95. She was a sweet lady, and I would see her at mass every weekend during duck season when I was down there.

She had a bout with covid quite a few months back which really weakend her already frail demeanor. She had bounced back some and was doing her thing.

This photo was taken of her last week on July 4th...... May she rest in peace.

Never had the pleasure of meeting her but sure know that type, iconic in the area I'm sure; may she rest in peace.

Hadn't been in her place in years and didn't know she was still there. May she and those who love her know God's Grace.

Bet she could tell you some stories from years past in the area!!!!!!!

This is a little dated, but if you haven't already seen it, here is a video of band-recoveries of white-fronted geese banded in the same location in the Arctic from 1974-2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njUranK0czk

The band recoveries are summarized like we would radio locations during a season to estimate a home-range, with red being the core of the distribution. Remember, these birds were banded, almost all as molting adults, in the same location. But look at the shift in recovery distribution. And so it's gone for us, as well. Sure liked it better when we were the shift's benefactors. Having been here long enough to see the specks and blues move out and the Ross and Richardson's geese pass on through, can't help but wonder how long the black-bellies will stick around?

Not good. I'm just glad I was given the opportunity to see and participate in some of the good times with migration here in the state. Maybe it'll swing back this way in time.
