Blake Update. He's finally doing bettter comapred to last week and is said to be going home tomorrow, although with baggage. He'll have a wound evac that he'll have to maitain and carry around for a while. They tested his ability to matain the unit and hoses today, and he's been walking. We'll see how the night goes.

I was down at the camp this weekend, alone and took home 50 lbs of shrimp. I was able to get the 25# limit on Friday and Saturday afternoon. May fingers are full of holes and sore from heading these things. (I know Rick, I'm always bitching...LOL)

We did have a slight rise in water so Randall and I passed on a blind invite on some managed marsh near us to check out our place Saturday morning. We still do no have enough water and I don't think the rain for tonight and tomorrow willl do the trick. I did however make a hunt Sunday in that manged place and it was wonderfull. Saturday I got a text at 6:25 AM that they were finished. Sunday we finished around 7:30 as we all had severly bent barrels. We all missed on a couple of flocks pintail and teal, and a few widgeon. We could have finished much earlier but I wasn't complaning. I so enjoyed the time in that blind with good company. I may have an opportunity to do it again over the Thanksgiving weekend.

This would be Rick walking out to adjust the decoys...LOL.... Such a nice painting.

Great to hear Blake's making progress and headed home. Please tell him we've been thinking of him.

Jealous of all those shrimp.

And, yes, it would be interesting to know how many birds were killed while my own tail feathers were squated down in cold rice water.

Glad you got on a good hunt Dave, and what a box of horned goodness you have fetched from the marsh!!!!!
Also good to hear that Blake's recovery is headed in the right direction, albeit slow. Let him know we are rooting for his progress!!!!

Blake called me early this morning and he sounded really good. He may be discharged today if all of the boxes get checked by the hospital staff. His brusing is starting to fade as eveident in pictures I was sent.

Blake got a call yesterday from the guy that hit him. He was in a room in the same hospital. He had no idea at first who it was and thought one of his friends was pulling a prank. Both of his legs are broken and is wearing a hallow. He was said to be discharged yesterday. It was a short call and was very emotional for the other guy.

Blake is home and doing well. He's on his way to recovery and is healing up nicely. We might see him in the blind for the 2nd or 3rd split, if we get water.

I'm heading to the camp tomorrow afternoon with one of my grandaughters after our Thnksgiving meal. She is the one that shares birthdays with me. She was with Blake and I last year in the blind on our bitrthday, and has demanded that it become a tridition. She became mighty upset when her parents insinuated otrherwise.

I was told yesterday that we did get a rise in waterlevel this week, so she and I may get a chance to put out the decoys and make a hunt. We shall see.

Blake is home, healing up nicely, and is well on his way to recovery. He may be well enough to hunt our second split, if we get water.

My granddaughter and I had a wonderful time at the camp this weekend. We brought home another 32# of shrimp and had a good time sitting around a neighbors camp fire where she had the company of a few other kids.

Our water is still too low, but one of the blind holders on our lease made a run in the deeper ditches and made his way to our pond entrance. Was told he flushed a good many birds there but was unable to run the ponds. There is a shallow flood in the marsh but the mud has dried to a concrete consistency, which kicks the mud motor out of the water. I can tell from our launch site that the water is still way too low for our blind area.

I was hoping for the rain shown in the forecast for yesterday evening, but it never happened. I sure hope we get a deluge from the forecasted rain on Thursday. First split closes this Sunday, 12/3.

It looks like the green headed park ducks have made it down to the Gulf of Mexico. 3 separate blinds this morning in Chenier. Hoping for lots of rain Thursday through the weekend. Should be an interesting 2nd split.

We got a really good cold snap. I was hoping to start hitting the cooling lake, but after this push of arctic air the forecast is 40's and rain. The worst weather possible. Nothing worse than just above freeze, rain, damp, miserable conditions. But by the end of tomorrow all the shallow water should be frozen hard. 14 degrees tonight after daytime high of 26 today and a daytime high of 25 tomorrow. Only to thaw in a few days. Highs in the low 40's and light rain most days.

But everything freezing up should move some ducks. I just wish it would stay below freezing until February.

I have dibbs on a little black lab female born the week of Thansgiving. She is one of ten. The Dam and sire are both small Labs and have achieved their HRCH titles. Both dogs are hunted by the trainer/owner and are said to be great in a duck blind.

This kennel is very near to my home, which makes it great for me. I'm very excited to meet my new blind partner, as is my wife. I should have her home in early January. So begins a new chapter..... I hope Ellie likes our new friend... sniff, sniff.

Super high tide last night plus 4" of rain in Chenier may have done the trick....... More rain on the way. Insert smiley faces

I went down to the camp on Friday late afternoon with intentions of checking our water situation only, but in route I got a phone call asking if I'd like to make a morning hunt. I couldn't pass that up. Randall and I were dropped in a blind and we did well, as did the other two blinds. Randal and I were cut short of filling due to our transportation (Lease holder) who filled and was ready to go. If I remember correctly it was around 8:15. Heavy fog was a hindrance early and we could hear birds just above the layer all morning. I was told that those who waited out the low fog lift had a show.

I was able to get to my blind and run around the lease, even through the ponds. We have a perfect fill depth and we did jump a few birds. I will be out there this weekend to prep the blind and put out decoys. The bottom of the ponds are hard as concrete and I will be able to walk alongside the boat to put out decoys, for now any way. I was able to get on step even with the hard bottom, but eased into it. The motor was bucking. I have requested that the water level be maintained at its current level or just 3 inches higher at the max..…We’ll see how that goes.

I'm hoping for a change in weather and a push of new birds between now and the first weekend of the second split. It seems the birds have spread out a bit with the rain. Every rice patty and cow pasture on my route down there was full of water. The crops (craws) of all birds I cleaned contained an overload of either rice or grass seeds.

Paul texted last evening with familiar photos of the swarm of birds on the levee at his Rockefeller bait site and an invite to join the banding party tomorrow evening. Know it's a long shot for you, but we'll be meeting by the headquarters between 4 and 4:30. Site was loaded by 4:45 in the first photo and way the hey beyond so by 5:30, so hopefully won't be a late shoot, just a lot of birds to band and check for flu.
