Doves

Well finally got off my butt and made time to do a little hunting. Quite a few doves when we arrived but I played the wind wrong and once the shooting started most of the birds bugged out.

After all the summer training the dog was a breaking fool. Somehow he lost a dove. Lots of little errors here and there. Shooting was way off. I ended up with 13 and Vincenzia brought home five. The hunt started at 83° and when it ended it was 62°. Also used the shotkam for the first time. I did a quick review of those videos and I guess I will have to be slower at moving the gun once I know a bird is going down. The reason being is it’s hard to tell the bird is going down as I move too fast to the next bird.

Vincenzia and I got out tonight. Man oh man was a shooting like crap! I was saving this field for tomorrow but we lost a lot of birds from yesterday with the Northwind. As we are walking in a hawk was flying around the field scaring everything up. I would say a quart of the birds came back. I ended up with nine and she shot 11. Of course she was pretty stoked that she shot better than me.

I guess the craziest part of the hunt was Vincenzia shot a dove that landed in a bunch of cattails. Reaper ran in to retrieve it and came out with a hen gadwall. Thankfully no harm was done to her. I was able to carry her back into the cattails. Very minimal water in there. Put her on the shoreline, she walked into the water and quacked at me a few times.

Besides missing a lot, the most frustrating part was the battery on my shotkam was dead. Well I hope that’s what the problem was!

On the drive to my first well the truck got down to 36°. I like that better than the 90° temperatures we had the other day. Definitely don’t know how you guys do it down there!

Hoping those cool temps have teal on the move as well ! We're going to start the September teal season next weekend with the darkness of a new moon so won't be banking on overnight arrivals other than from weather/pressure.

Found a few more last night to hunt with most of the family. Less birds but better shooting skills. Farmer called and asked if I could help him today so not sure the next time I’ll get out after Doves. Definitely had more birds shoot at this year but did not make our shots count. Some upland birds open up this weekend and then cranes next weekend.
