Thank you guys, I do appreciate all the comments...
All I have to go on upland hunting in the rain is pheasant hunting and I don't do very well... Also don't have very much experience at it, three times in 19 years...
It looks like I'll have tomorrow and Saturday to practice

PorkChop wrote:Also curious how do they flush and fly? Like sharptails will do so many wing beats then glide wing beats glide wing beats glide, pheasants and Partridge is usually constant wing beats until they glide for a good distance. Well partridge don’t go very far typically they only usually fly less than 100 yards. I have been seeing some more but I have not sent you the locations as it’s been around on harvested crap. We had a bunch in the goose decoys this morning. Didn’t want to shoot them with BBs

I would say yes just like sharptails, I'm hunting both(the reason I call it Prairie grouse hunting) I killed a sharptail yesterday...
If Moe locks them down and I walk up and flush them they will fly off very low like a pheasant...
If they just flush and fly on their own they do the wing beat thing like you described...

It looks like it could start here as early as midnight tonight at least up by me and then Saturday and Sunday look to be a wash.

Like being first back to the boat house: pride turns to envy when you hear the guys that can still be out there shoot. Sweet to have such upland ops within reasonable drive.

Yes sir it is sweet, I had big plans to go on up to PorkChops area and hunt a day or so and visit with him, but they've been rained on...
This is sarcasm but I think you can see Canada from his house... so I wouldn't consider that a reasonable drive, but it is from here...

From which we may extrapolate that the drive home would be unreasonable. But for a chance to meet Vinnie Quack and crew...

Overall big plan was to come back through South Dakota and hunt a couple days on the way home...
Bucket list: meet Vinny Quack and crew, bunch of Stone Cold Killers...

Rain held off for us this morning, but the birds seemed spooky and we struggled getting very close to them... Made it back to the truck with two and worn out around noon... Napped at the motel until 3 ish and decided to hit one small spot, someone was there so we moved on... Ended up at the spot where we saw the rattlesnake last year, long story short we saw two more this afternoon :o :o (have NO intentions of EVER going back to that spot again)...On the way back to the truck after it started raining, Moe pointed three grouse and I killed one of them (he did a really good job on these birds) proud of him he's getting better...

Great job Moe! I think there’s a George dubya quote in there somewhere about fooling me once and twice on the rattlesnake area!

Trigger gets to hunt the doves, ducks and pheasants, this trip is pretty much the Moe show...
She spends a lot of the time in the truck but she's a trooper... Yesterday afternoon on the way back to the motel I stopped by a small spot and hunted with her for about 45 minutes...

Yesterday Moe and I hunted one of my hot spots and never saw a bird... :o We've been seeing a lot of birds so it was surprising not to see any... Decided to drive around and see where others were hunting and try to make a plan for Sunday morning... With plan A and B decided on we're on our way back to the motel and spot 4 in the
Road and they get up and fly into public land :o and they don't fly very far, so I get Moe out of the truck and we managed to kill two of them...

Moe and I hunted again this morning... It was the windiest morning we've had since we've been here and the birds seem very spooky (but they've also been hunted for 7 days) we saw a lot fly off from us... :o But as I always tell my buddies we only kill the dumb ones, and we managed to find three...

Are you able to hunt Doves or is that a different license? Still a bunch up here so I’m guessing there should be plenty down there. we ended up with a little over 2 inches of rain. It’s a muddy mess! Did nothing for the potholes though!

Yes we can hunt doves and I saw a lot of doves this year... I passed on an opportunity the first afternoon it was hot, then I seem to be tired and it wasn't that important...
It rained here but I don't know how much the roads seem to handle it fairly well, at least the ones I travel on...

Hopefully things clear up around there and y'all are ready to go by Saturday morning, if I remember correctly is that your duck opener?

Today was our 6th and final day... Moving Day always takes up more time than you think and by the time we made it to plan C it was 8:30 before we started hunting... We left the truck hunting with the wind... :o I don't think it really affected anything anyway... We had a group flush on their own about 200 yards and they're end up being one scraggler and we killed him... On the way back to the truck hunting into the wind we were pushing some birds and Moe would not slow up to my liking and I wowed him and they flushed about 50 yards out, so I realize that didn't work... Luckily we found another group and I just used the tone on the collar and he responded well and we got close enough to kill our second and final bird of the morning...
