Well yesterday the 21st was our opener. Had several storms roll through during the night and I decided it was best to not rip up any fields. Decided to go scouting instead. Really did not find much of anything. Pulled into an approach to turn around and my truck has that deal When you stop the motor cuts out. Well, it never restarted. Ha ha now I have two trucks screwing with me. I had to wait for Sarah. She had a cupcake order so I told her just to finish up the frosting that she was making and then come get me. Sat there for about an hour and a half. Hoping somebody would drive by but nobody ever did. I guess it depends on the situation. That’s a good thing but it’s also a bad thing.
I don’t know I’m thinking, maybe my starter is going out. An auto mechanic I am not.
With the sun shining and the wind blowing, I knew things would dry out so we decided to do an evening hunt in a field that we have seen the birds flying over. We ended up just setting up crane decoys, and four Lucky ducks. Had a few different flocks work us. I told Vincenzia I wasn’t gonna shoot. I figured that would take a little pressure off of her. She picked out a green head and tagged its right wing. It did one of those jobs where it flies a foot off the ground. Finally went down about 400 yards away in a standing soybean field. I had the bird marked where it went in. I knew it would be full of life, so I got as downwind as I could, and sent reaper in. Saw his tail going nuts, so I knew he was on the trail. Took him about six or seven minutes and out he came with that bird. Very very pleased with his nose!
We had about 30 snow geese fly over when we were setting up. That was a pretty good sign of what’s to come.
Like I said, she could’ve probably shot at a few widgeon and her pintail. In hindsight, we should’ve set up some duck decoys as well.
Left my truck running the whole time.
Here’s the hero shot
We went goose hunting this morning. Left the house it was 38° and we saw it was as low as 35°. That should send a bunch of teal south.
