If I drove in 4WD every time it snowed I would put 10K miles on my 4WD every year. It would wear out very quickly.SIPING DOES INCREASE TRACTION FOR ACCELERATING OR BRAKING, PERIOD. Wether they were engineered for it or not.
Yes, but if the tire is not designed to handle the siping you are gambling that your tire can handle the extra stress and reduced structure.YES SNOW ON THE ROADS. Which can easily put you into the snow in the ditch where there is usually more snow. Or heavy drifting on the roads (very common in flatlanderville)
I live near one of the largest lakes in the world, we have a lot of wind and drifting... I understand that sometime it is needed. Don't get me wrong I have had to drive to work in 4WD, but driving in 4WD all the time is not necessary.
i put a few thousand miles on my truck every year in 4wd, haven't had a problem yet. for the record, i was driving curvy mountain roads, so yeah, it was needed. i forgot that most of the country is dead flat, if you are going up or down steep inclines, you want 4wd.
woody, you're the only person i've ever heard arguing against siping. if it was so dangerous, tire shops wouldn't do it, period.
I'm not arguing against it. I've heard it causes more even wearing on a tire, but I would guess it will wear out the tire faster.
It most certainly reduces the structural stability of the tire and increases the forces put on the tire. That is not a good mix. I doubt anyone has done a study on the correlation between blowouts and siping, so it is hard to say if there is enough factor of safety designed in to the tire or not.
The only thin that gets cut is the part that is made to wear. That is a fair point i didnt think of I highly doubt it will cause blowouts. But if you drive fairly aggressively, it will tear the tread up faster than an unsiped tire. I may have found that out the hard way.....
And I will not buy another siped tire. No need for where I live. And if I was on snow or ice for 1/2 the year, I would get another set if wheels an put winter tires on them. Those things are amazingly grippy on snow/ice.

4wd is for fuckin around or off road conditions. I'm pretty sure my rear tires put 4 times the revs of my fronts in winter, minimum.
assateague wrote:I'm just astounded by the "when I get stuck, I'll lock er in". Why the fuck do you want to get stuck? If it was in 4WD, you wouldn't have got stuck in the first place. Like putting a rubber on after you blow your nut.
assateague wrote:And for the "4WD is for off road use", explain this. What constitutes the difference between "off road" and "on road" use? It's not the "road" part, because unmaintained forest service roads are still "roads". No, the difference is "off road" means "areas with less than optimal conditions, where the need for increased traction is desired". And a snow covered road most certainly fits the bill.

My truck gets 19.7 MPG in 2WD and about 12 MPG in 4WD (highway).
I drive 40 miles both ways to work 5 days a week, where I live there is snow on the roads for about 3.5 months a year (5250 Miles).
I probably drive another 75 miles a week in addition to going to work. (984.375 miles)
Gas is about 3.30/gal.
(5250+984.38)/18.7=333.39 gal .... 333.39*3.3 = $1100.18
(5250+984.38)/12= 519.53 gal .... 519.53*3.3 = $1714.45
$1714.45- $1100.18 = $614.27
$614.27/20 = 30.7
I can pay you, your $20 to pull me out every 3 days and break even.

With all do respect, assa, that is the fucking most stupid argument you could make. I learned to drive in an 89 Chevy 1500 with a 454 big block, 2X4. and I was born on Christmas. In other words I got my license near the beginning of winter. It had a 454 so if you goosed her just a little the tires broke loose on dry pavement. Yet, I never got in a snow related accident or got it stuck along side the road in 2.5 years of driving it. If you know how to drive in snow 4X4 is not needed until it is extremely bad.assateague wrote:And for the "4WD is for off road use", explain this. That is about right, but you are missing the point... in some cases it is necessary to use 4WD on snowy roads, but they were talking about using it every time it snowed.assateague wrote:But do what you want.
