Ah a Christmas story. Oh God I have lots.
Try to keep it simple.
My in-laws moved to where the lake I hunted at was in their back yard.
They moved to a little ranch house on Lithia Lane by Lithia Springs at Lake Shelbyville. That house had been air lifted by chopper. It had TWO subfloor systems.
They added on a room that stood alone.
Had it's own furnace, bathroom, and a fireplace. Lots of windows it was all glass on one side for watching birds.
I camped in that room one year and they never let me forget it. Wet dog ....you know.
Sigh.
The moral is never take your bird dog to the mother in laws bird room.

Yesterday morning at -9 everything was fine.
Then the wind picked up and shit started freezing.
First the bathtub drain. Then the hot water...
Sigh. So I tried the washing machine. It filled up just fine but emptying it? Aw fuck.
Then the kitchen sink hot water side quit.
Man I thought I had this but the wind just kept blowing harder.
The tub water started while we were asleep of course.
It drained thank God.
The washing machine works now. I had a heater on it all night.
Cmon kitchen sink...
Wind is still blowing but only 20 ish.
I figure by noon maybe that water pipe thaws.
The way it's routed along the edge of a slab inside the concrete is why it freezes.
Some cub fucked up good.
We deal with it.
I really thought we had this shit figured out.
-9 with 35 mph wind can mess up any plan.
Last night the wind was howling. The fire dept went out several times I was really glad I'm not them.

This is the wife's brainstorm and it sort of works.
Pipes hot air into the wall.
If it gets extreme we've pulled the dryer out and vented it into the wall but that's risky and dangerous.
Keep fire extinguisher handy.

If you calculate the cost of all the good stuff I put into the turkey brine I think the brine cost more than the turkey.
Orange juice and a half gallon of apple juice brown sugar spices and a cup of honey.
3 oranges 3 limes 3 lemons.
1.5 cups of salt
It's gonna be good.
Pellet smoke it tomorrow morning.
Cook it then deliver to the grandchildren and their parents.
I'm going to sit there gnawing on a leg as they open presents.

Plan b is toss it into the oven.
If the grill can maintain 350 its good.
I think it will work.
Plugged it in turned it on and within minutes it was at 350.

It's hard to say how long it will take but 4 hours is a good estimate.

That bird came back. It's a red bellied woodpecker like you said. Either that or another bird showed up.
The one we just saw showed its breast, side, and back we got a good look right before squirrels chased it off

Just watched to us congressmen ask each other when they were born and how old they are.

In their defense I was born in 1961 and every ten years I subtract wrong and for two years I'm the same age.
I was 23 for two years...33 for two years....43...53...etc

If I see the biologists truck again I'm going to beg the guy to ride with him a day. I think it'd be good to show how much work it is to keep the wma where it's flooded and the emptying it out part. He will pop the drains around January 29th and the water drops very fast.

There are islands and submerged humps.
Ehlers, a former member here, used a pontoon boat barge to hunt way out on the lake.
Talk about extreme....
Speaking of extreme I used to do waterfowl.and upland both and during the week from Christmas til end of pheasant season I might accidentally find some open water in a drainage ditch and uhhh...yeah I was pretty extreme way back in the 1900s. When everyone got cell phones that had to end.
Point is that the mallards don't get here until after my season is over and they're hiding in ditches under a drainage pipe to get out of the wind.
I used to have all them wet spots mapped out in my head.


If you walk 5 miles along ditches here you'll see this and take notes especially if you trap.

For years I'd sneak out on Christmas morning to check ponds and get in a real quick hunt then go open gifts...
If you're out at lst for ducks on Christmas morning it's probably the most quiet time.
No jets flying or car noises etc.
It's kind of surreal but where I'm at pure quietness is unusual. I tried it on the front porch just now.
All I heard was the wind blowing.

I know someone that's 6' tall but I guess I'll keep the shirt.
If I wear something under it like a thin merino sweater it's just right. Didn't expect that.
Sweet combo.
Light wool sweater under a fleece button up shirt is comfortable and I can move.
Warm? Yup.
If it gets wet ring it all out and just put it back on I've done it. Metal buttons? Hm. I'm hard on buttons. I lean over the edge of my boat and crack plastic ones. My Drake shirket needs work on buttons. That product is another one you will love.

Wish the forecast would stay stable it keeps changing my plan and at some point you say fuck it.
Yesterday it was full of rain forget camping and today it says forget paying all that money for a room take the tent. Decisions decisions and the calendar keeps going forward.
I "think" MAYBE I'll head south Friday and camp 5 nights.
If I kill any ducks would be pure luck.
If I'd just broke the rules and went early...
It's tempting as hell to try and establish Arkansas resident status at this point.
