The chicks are getting big and I think the one the kids named "Rosie" is a rooster. The girl at the feed store said they should all be hens but there's still a chance of getting a rooster of course, I think we're only gonna have the one.

Those damn things are just not too bright. We've tried several times, but they keep wandering off and getting hit by cars and/or eaten. I just let the neighbors handle it. Their two flocks have combined to make one, and they rotate through our places, so I only have to deal with their noisy asses every third day or so. Nice to have around, bug-wise, but not good for much else. Hell, when the momma hatches her eggs out, she just leaves them at about 4 days. Little fuckers don't have a prayer.

So how do I get these little twats to lay in the nest box I built them? Do I need to go buy some of the plastic ones at the feed store?

If they haven't started laying in the nest boxes yet, your kids will have to learn where the hens favorite spots are to lay eggs out in the yard until the birds start using the henhouse. Once a day is fine if you're going to stick the eggs in the fridge.

Put fake eggs or golf balls in the nesting boxes. You can buy a half dozen plastic eggs at hobby lobby for $1.50. Just put one or two in each of the boxes, and keep clean straw in them.

And when you find the spots they're laying in around the yard, make sure you take all those eggs every day. They'll lay where there are other eggs, but be prepared at various times to find a huge stash of eggs. Just take them all out and toss them, and after a day or two of being empty, they won't lay there anymore. The biggest thing is to get the fake eggs or golf balls in the nesting boxes.

We usually collect ours every other day, but go 3 or 4 days on occasion. Fresh eggs last forever. If you have any doubts, put them in a pot of water- if the sit on the bottom, they're perfectly fine, but if they float point up, or come off the bottom, toss them.
