The way they figured the planes final position was through INMARSAT, which is a satellite phone. The planes phone was left on and although it wasn't being used, the satellite continued to track it in case the flight crew decided to make a call.
Most yachts and ships also use the same satellite phone system, it's been is service for 25 years or so.

All EPIRBS transmit on 406 MHZ. The satellites calculate and instantly transmit position of activated device to nearest USCG command center.
We carried four on the last boat I ran. One was fixed upside down in a bracket and had a hydrostatic release that released the EPIRB when it went below 10' of water, it would float to the surface and began transmitting automatically. Two others were in life raft canisters and were available to be activated manually once you were in the raft. The fourth we kept in our "Ditch Bag" along with drinking water, first aid kit etc. which was kept in the wheelhouse and grabbed on the way out the door.

Ok, back to the idea that it's a project to calculate the cost of equipping one aircraft with the latest and best tracking technology. Divide it by number of flights and number of passengers per flight and determine just how expensive is it and then ask airlines why this isn't standard on all commercial aircraft.
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

the boat I'm on has one in the bridge and one in a ditch bag the tanker had one in the bridge and one in the life boat. Having on the bottom like that is a great idea .

I'll bet the one on your bridge has a hydrostatic release. The EPIRB batteries have a 5 year shelf life but the hydrostatic release must be replaced each year. Check the date punched on your boat's hydrostatic release and maybe you can bust the captain's balls if it's out of date.

it doesn't, it's easy to grab for emergencies. The first thing I asked was for a station bill copy and where's the epirb.
