As it turns out a sprint car is turned by sliding the back tires around (by throttling and spinning the tires) and using a front right disk brake. So when he hit throttle he was trying to avoid hitting the guy.
That's how they turn at speed, but the caution was thrown. They can turn their wheels to maneuver just fine at slow speeds.
The wing/airfoil sticks down on the front right of the car and leaves a blind spot for the driver. So Tony is likely to have not seen the guy until the last second and was left with a split second decision on how to react.
The kid was out of his car while Tony was coming down the front stretch, I'm sure he knew he was there. If the car was at speed that corner would have blocked his view, but it was caution, so the car was going straight, not sideways.
These cars idle at 35-40 mph and are not stopped using conventional breaking. They down shift to slow down and take the car out of gear and let it drift to a stop, to stop completely.
Not true. They can idle very slowly, and usually do right before a restart. That might be with the drivers on the brakes tho, not sure. Sprint cars only have one gear. They are direct drive which is why they need to be pushed to start. They can only take it out of gear but that's it and if they do, they need to kill it, roll it till the driveline can reengage and turn the motor to start it.
Also, the guy that was hit had walked down past the mid point of the track and his car was blocking the top quarter of the track, leaving Tony a very small path to get by him.
All evidence so far points to Tony being completely innocent.
I do think that Tony tried to spray the kid with dirt, and slick track or kid moving caused the end result. I don't think he intended any actual harm.
It all started because Tony came up on him in the corner but he was in front of him so the kid either had to back off or get put in the wall. Kid ended up in the wall and tried to play the "we love drama" roll that TV channels keep pushing in the racing scene.
