I'm pretty sure that the black pipe thread is the same as conduit. And yes, the nipples are 3/4", but the hole will need to be about 15/16 to get it to thread in. Really, you only need one coming up. I keep the caps off of the other two for only about 2 minutes, if that. It heats up QUICK when you put the fire basket in, and I've only needed to control the air from the one valve. The other two nipples just stay capped the whole time.

I'm picking up what your putting down. I'm still planning on going with the 2 up rights just because I'm a little OCD on symmetry.

Side note. If you want some cooking ideas, info go to "man cave meals" on youtube. :D

I lost focus when the thread got to the part about two nipples. Huh?
Where do you get these nipples? Are they pink and perky?

Nice! Can't wait to see it.

I went to walmart today and they had some cheap $10 portable grills. Looked like you could swipe the grate (small one) off that one and use it for the bottom of the charcoal basket. Might be able to use some handles as well.

Been watching a bunch of guys on youtube use the UDS's. Lot of them are adding another rack about the charcoal as a "difuser" rack. Basically putting a preferated pizza pan on that rack to defer the heat from being direct heat on the meat... thoughts?

Unnecessary, IMO. There isn't that much heat to diffuse. I am thinking about getting another cooking rack for the top, so I can cook some ribs and chicken at the same time.

go to the BBQ section of a hardware store and they sell replacement grates and grills so you don't have to buy a whole BBQ

7" down from the top is where I put the 3 bolts. I'm thinking if I add another 3 1/2" up from that, I should be able to put ribs on top and chicken halves on the bottom. Don't want chicken grease dripping on my ribs. I was figuring I could get two racks of ribs and 1 chicken on what I have now, which is good for us, but if I'm ever having anyone over, the extra rack would be nice to have as an option. Then I could cook three racks, and 3 chickens.

I always cut my ribs in half and put them one on top of the other. It keeps them juicy and with two cooking racks, I could fit 10-12 racks of ribs in there.

That's the shit. I painted mine afterwards, too. Took me two cans of paint, right on the money. You're using gloss, so might want to get three.

How are you gonna top off that smoke stack?

And on a side note, I would've only used three bolts for the rack. 3 of anything will always balance, 4 will almost guarantee that it "rocks" a bit, like a bad table at McDonalds. I hate that rock. If I ever make a chair, it's gonna have three legs.

That's awesome Red, what threading did you get them to cut that pipe so it fit? What kind of piping did you use?
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Still thinking on that. Any ideas? Figured I'd just set the cap on top and leave a gap until I decided what to do

That'd work fine. I don't ever have to mess with mine- leave it about a third open the whole time after it reaches temp, and just adjust the temp with the valve. This is pretty hillbillied up, but if you cut the bottom off a can, and put it on there, the drinking hole in the top would probably be just about right. Just an idea until you figure something out, because sure as shit, if you just set something on it, a person or dog will bump it and knock it off, just after you checked the temp, and when you come back later that thing will be rolling about 275 with the smokestack wide open. With dried up burned black ribs.

I don't know jim, a couple seasons ago I was hunting with my buddy and his female choc lab tessa, turns out tessa was just coming into heat. Tug noticed this fact first, and spent the entire morning "trying" to knock a chunk off. We didn't shoot many duck that day on account of us laughing our asses off. Turns out a 3 legged dog isn't all that stable once his hips start going into overdrive. He'd get up there and start goin for broke and fall over on the ground still air humping. This went on all morning. Poor guy never did get his carrot wet.
