expanded form, (if i remember correctly, and thats totally suspect) requires order to be in deminishing place value..

I'm pretty sure you're right. But by telling them it's wrong, they just reinforced something which is incorrect. Namely, that addition must be performed in a certain order. Because both of those answers most assuredly equal the proper amount.

The way I understand expanded form, which doesn't mean shit btw, is that its not necessarily written as a "math problem" (even though it is) but meant to be read/written as a sentence.

254 = read aloud as a word is two hundred fifty-four, or 200+50+4.

agree 100%. expanded form really has very little use until you get into upper division math. using it in the 2nd grade just complicates a thought process that is in its early develpmental stages..

Arguing about second grade level math has its value but given that it's being done in " the blind" in a waterfowl chat forum...priceless. :)

My turn.

Talked to an old friend over the weekend and he told me something that took me from zero to assamad.

When I was in middle school, I was in the choir (please save choir boy jokes for the end). There was probably 3 girls for every dude, and most of us guys expressed interest in starting a separate group for the guys only. The music teacher/choir director told us if we could get a group together and show up once a week, he would be there to direct it, on his own time.

So we did. One morning every week we would get to school an hour early for men's choir. We all loved it. The teacher was a stand up guy who did a couple tours in Desert Storm, and he liked having the "boys club" just as much as we did. We had the nose tackle for the 8th grade football team standing next to the president of the 6th grade book club and we all gt along great. I remember going to the VFW and singing on veterans day, we did all sorts of cools stuff. What made it so cool is we felt like we owned it. It was 100% voluntary, no grades, no obligation to be there. Just 20-30 guys showing up because they wanted to be a part.

Then I find out this year that the school told him that he needs to find a time after school to hold rehearsal. They said that more kids will participate if it isn't so early in the morning, and some other bullshit about keeping kids at school for too long. If you aren't confused, go back and read the part where I said this is all 100% voluntary. Anyone can come and go as he pleases. Not during school hours, no grades, none of the school's goddamn business, as a matter of fact.

Now the whole thing is coming apart. A few guys are on the basketball team, one is the president of the chess club, one is the student council treasurer, etc... And they can't find a day after school to make it work.

So the school found something great that they didn't have a finger in, and decided to completely fuck it all up. I'm sure they are going to try and fight it, hoping it goes well for them. It's laughable, it started very organically and ran flawlessly for years until the exact second the administration decided to hijack it. And they destroyed it in about 6 minutes.

Done.

Reminds me of Layniebug's math homework. She always has that stupid "Is your answer reasonable? Why or why not?" question at the end. I now have it pounded into her head that the ONLY answer she is ever to write there is "Yes. Because it is correct." So far, no nasty notes about it.

Ok, I'm pretty sure that 1:30 is the right answer. But with the verb tenses disagreeing, and the fact that we have no idea what time it was when Ben told him he'd be there in 25 minutes, there's really no right answer.

Trick question.

It says in the first part of the question that it is 1 o'clock.

well obviously the right answer is that Ben is a lazy fuckstick and probably has a history of being late to work and appointments.

i have no idea what the acceptable answer would be.

Negative, everything else is arbitrary. The first statement was the fact that it is (present tense=currently) 1 o'clock. How the hell does Ben know Hunter shows up 5 minutes late (supposedly 1:30) if it is currently 1:00? Hunter told Ben he would meet him in 25 minutes at 12:30, he ran 5 minutes late and showed up at 1:00. Either that, or Ben is from the futre...
