I wouldn't buy one if I had one laying around. From what I understand the parts that go into doing it right aren't cheap...

Well then hurry up. I have a line on a drum I hope to pick up Friday.

I might wait for a few more awesome idea to come out of you guys before I build the best UDS of all time!

i had found an old drum sitting between two silos. when i started a fire in it to burn it all clean, it blew a big hole in the side. was a little too rusty i guess :?
i'm going to go hunt another one down this weekend

I found some on craigslist for $30 with a lid. Seems like a great deal for food grade drums that have been used once.

Our plant has to pay a $45 deposit for oil drums.

Don't get a food grade drum. From what I understand, they are an absolute bitch to clean out.

I can't believe how hard it is for some of you guys to get ahold of a barrel. I just walked out behind the shop and have 4 of them in our scrap metal dumpster.

You guys have got me wanting build one of these now. I've got a couple barrels at home, may have to get started this weekend.

You burn it, but then have to take a grinder with a wire wheel to the inside to get the epoxy liner off. That liner is what makes it "food grade". Mine had some sort of oil in it. But a glowing red burn for about 6 hours took care of any of that, and no grinding at all.

Seems unsafe. Who knows what kind of toxins were in the barrel before.

Here's my IL ignorance. Why not leave the epoxy liner? If it didn't burn out, is it going to affect the cooking?

Jim's right. Grind the shit outta the inside of the barrel of its got the liner. I tried burning mine out first. Didn't work. Hit it with the grinder. Then burned it again.

Well, that's a damn good question. It really shouldn't at all, especially since it's only getting up to 225 or so, and after the first two runs, I have about 1/8" coating of slick smoke grease all over everything in there. I honestly don't know why they grind them off- just what I say all over the place when I was doing my research.

Whatever they were, they're not magic toxins. Red hot for hours=whatever it was is gone. No worries here. But if you ever come visit I'll cook you a hotdog in the microwave if it'll make you feel safer. Or you could just wear a helmet and eat some of the ribs from my barrel. Either way, Doc.

Question for you Jimbo.
Actually just three words.

Smoked snapping turtle?

Allegedly I may have one on its way.

I think that would be awesome. It's fatty, and tastes like roast beef as is. I'd clean it, separate it from the shell, and smoke it whole, then pick the meat.

Just found a mess load of barrels that were on craigslist in my town. Call the guy, ask what hes got. Exactly what I want. Then I ask where he was located....WTF, WHY WOULD YOU ADVERTISE IN MY CITY WHEN YOU ARE 75 MILES AWAY.
