I've already told the kids that if they want to go to anything other than a community college, they had better be ready to join the military to pay for it. Seriously. It's not me being cheap this time, it's that the cost to value ratio of a college education is so out of whack now that I refuse to pay it. I'm not putting the entire family in financial straits to pay for something which will, in a perfect world, pay for itself in maybe 30 years. Join the military for 5 years, and it'll pay for itself in less than 10. Hell, go to school first, then join the military- then it'll be paid for in 3 years, so you get out with a college degree, 5 years of experience, and zero student loan debt, which is exactly what I did. I graduated from college in 1991, and two of my roommates just finished paying off their student loans 2 years ago. Stupid. Mine were paid off by 1994. I believe they still pay off up to $60,000 in student loans for you.

Only 4 years and you get the GI bill with a $1200 investment. $1200 and 4 years of service will buy you a $60,000+ education.

Also I think it's insane that a degree cost so much money when everything you learn in a class you can easily learn for free on the internet.

I agree.

As for the GI Bill, a $1,200 investment may get you a $60,000+ education, but if you go to school first, I just Googled it, and the Loan Repayment Program is good for up to $65,000. So for $0 investment, you get $65,000, and you also go in as an E4, so there is quite a bit more pay involved. Either way is good, but I prefer the LRP.

Don't you get more "points" or something for enlisting someone with a degree? No idea how recruiting works, but I know my recruiter was promising me the damn world to get me to join.

Our Land-Grant Colleges were formed for a reason...
We had a shortage of Officers in the military.

The colleges have lost their way and forgot what their original purpose is/was.

ROTC.

Not to sort out the rich kids from the poor kids and put them into rich-kid do-nothing state jobs. That's my perspective and I "think" AT and I share the same perspective.

Polluting our colleges with foreign ideas, cultures, and values is watering down what made our country great in the first place.

Exporting knowledge is a very bad idea yet that's exactly what our universities are set up to do (now).

Coast Guard doesn't do the LRP. We have tution assistance which is free money for active duty people. I see people all the time complete a 4 year degree in their spare time without even touching their GI bill. Then transfer it to their spouse or children.

Sometimes you can. The CG offers the least amount of incentives to join. A 4 year degree only gets you E-3 if you join enlisted.

I'm bringing a guy in right now with a masters in applied mathematics. Wants to be a diesel mechanic.

Short answer is your degree doesn't get you shit unless you apply for and get accepted into OCS.

Me too.
When I enlisted I was told I could be anything but an MP because I didn't meet the height requirement.
I was like...Why would I want to be an MP when I can go to OCTS instead?

He offered me OCS, and seemed somewhat relieved when I declined. I wanted to go enlisted to guarantee a job. No way I wanted to risk getting branched Transportation or Artillery or some shit as an officer.

Instead, he told me I was going to get a year long vacation, on the ocean in California, with a very easy schedule, and then a job where I could pretty much pick my duty. And he didn't even lie. When I got to the Presidio of Monterey right out of Basic, I was in shock for a little while. First formation was at 7:30, then school until 3:30, PT in the afternoons, unless you played a sport, then you were exempt. But even if you weren't exempt, PT consisted of running on the beach. No TA 50 issue, 2 hour lunches on Thursdays, freaking awesome. Every morning, I opened the curtains of my single barracks room to a $1,000 view across Monterey Bay. It was sort of downhill after I left there until I got overseas, but he really didn't tell me a single lie.

Everything back then had a sign up bonus amount. I forget it all but I signed up for every bonus I could. Airborne? ok
Tank school?
ok

I forget all the schools I went to. If it had a bonus...I did it.

It's just so much easier convincing y'all that I'm nuts. Its what you want to believe so I've embraced that.
Being nuts helps complete the illusion.

Now, if I actually were skitso, do you think Illinois State Police would issue me this?
