Anybody have any idea what this is? Was a small tree in the way, had to cut it for the maple to have room to fall. These rounds are the trunk- not very big, maybe 12" diameter, 20' tall. Not dead, still green, and WILL NOT SPLIT. I split with a maul, and green wood of all flavored pops pretty easy. But not this. The split pic was about 4 shots from each end, but the grain is so twisted its almost circular inside. Miserable, miserable stuff.

Any ideas? The pictures make it look darker than it is- the bark is greenish, and the wood has a very yellow tint.

you need a hydraulic splitter!

I don't know a lot about trees but do you have much oak up there?

Nope, no leaves. Straight as an arrow, with no branches at all until about 15 feet, then a small crown. I've given up. Tried a wedge and sledge, no dice. Full swing, with all the ass I've got behind a sharpened maul gets me this:

I can only identify a handful of trees and then only ones with leaves.

That's the wood I built jr's first bow with, almost a month of drawing, hatcheting and whittling, I don't recommend it

Not sure if this was a joke or not, but I did it. It smells sort of sweet like a very, very, very mild green apple scent, maybe mixed with a very very light cherry. Not "sappy" or "green" smelling at all. Can't even dent this shit.

No way. Nobody has invented a workout that comes even close to cutting, splitting, and stacking wood.

I did.

The one piece I split finally (the pic), the damn grain goes sideways, left, right, down, every which way.

Not really. Some red, but mostly water oaks and pin oaks. But they're pretty straight grained.

Yep, it could be something else, but i've never been able to split a piece of elm by hand. Smells how you describe also. Red elm is a little stronger with a silage smell to it.

What do you usually cut for firewood besides the maple

80% silver maple, 10% oak, 10% cherry. We marked 4 really nice cherries today for next weekend, about 30" bases. I have a buddy that's got huge amounts of timber down, ready for cutting, but it's gonna be a pain in the ass to pick through all the gum and poplar. Might not be worth it, although I don't mind mixing in some gum if I have to.

I like burning the hard maples semi green, cherry, and hickory. Green wood burns just about perfect in my boiler..so just about anything gets thrown into it.

I'd live it if we had more hickory around here, but it's pretty rare. Cherry's nice, but I prefer a faster burning wood. I don't have a big enough fire box to take advantage of the slow, steady burn of cherry.

Cherry is probably the best wood for burning unsplit, which 90% of mine is. Suprised you dont have a wood boiler given your "lifestyle"
