That was my first guess, minus all the gray on it. Wings and feet look GE

Ive also never shot a hen GE, but any drake ive shot was more like the size of a wigeon.

Maybe it's a really really young drake. It looks like there might be just a little white/gray on the face right behind the bill.

The head shape and color, and the shape of the bill do, but not the color of the bill or the eyes. Or the size. If it's a GE, it's a common, not a Barrow's, but I've never seen a GE without, well, golden eyes.

That's awful small. The goldeneyes I've seen were closer to black duck size, nowhere close to a teal.

No I can tell that but it just looks like there is just a little bit if gray right above and behind the top of the bill. Can he get a pic if that?

Our GEs are pretty big also, about the size of a fat wigeon. Never shot a hen to debate whether it is or not.

I believe you. Can you explain how it doesn't look like the pics from any of my ID books? And of course, it's size. As I have stated, I've never shot one, but I have seen a couple in person, and they didn't have the same appearance as this one.

I see it more here in this picture, all except bill and eyes and size. Enough evidence for me though.

It's a juvenile. It's this years bird. Deadeye dan might see something I don't but, it looks like a first year hen. Usually juvie drakes will stiil have the solid black bill.

What's wierd is, it actually took me longer to find a picture of what I am used to seeing hen GEs look like, than the one my friend shot. Guess that's why I didn't put anything together when he sent me the text.
