Keg Question

I've asked this before, but still find it hard to believe. If I buy a 1/4 keg, and never return it, am I really only out the $20 deposit? I know they take my license info, obviously for more than carding me. I really need that stainless steel keg, though, since, if the deposit is it, it's about 1/10th as expensive as copper, and 1/5th as expensive as stainless cookware. Is this really how it works, or will I get a bill?

I've had a keg since high school. Never had to return it and never been billed for it. We've always used it as our deposit though. But I've had this one about 3 years.

Every time we've had kegs we had to pay the full price of the keg for a deposit until it is returned. Although this was in college towns as well not sure if that changes anything in keg rental protocols

That would make more sense. The distributor here charges $20, which no way covers the cost of a new keg. Maybe I should just ask them if they'll sell me an old/broken one.

Have you checked scrap yards? I see them laying around ours all the time.

Yeah, I ran to one on Saturday morning. They didn't have any, but I told them I'd give them $20 for a 1/4 or $30 for a half, and left my number. Hopefully something will pan out.

After thinking about it, I don't want to screw anybody over, since I'm sure that $20 won't cover their replacement, so I'm just going to keep asking, and/or hope the scrapyard calls me. I need to get my new still made before fall, though!

I picked up an aluminum one along the side of the road. It had been hit by a car. I have it in my scrap pile right now.

I need stainless, not aluminum. But that's probably worth a pretty penny these days.

Which reminds me, I forgot to take in the catalytic converter when I went down there Saturday. Oh well. Maybe I can even swap them for a keg.

They stopped taking cats here at any recycle center because thanks to battery powered sawzalls, people were coming out to their cars in the park and rides, hopping in, and all of a sudden their cars were VERY loud. SUVs and trucks more so than cars just for the ease of access obviously.

That'll work. Get me the inflatable kind, then I can mail you some dehydrated moonshine when I'm done, and we'll call it even.

In college we'd put down a deposit to cover the cost of the shell plus some. Just keep it and then do a keg swap every time you needed a new one and didn't have to come up with the money for a deposit. But prices did go up for keystone kegs I believe because the aluminum scrap was worth more than what they were charging

I'm getting concerned with this "aluminum" talk. Is this a new development in beer kegs? They're supposed to be stainless steel.

I think all the ones we've ever got were aluminum.

I picture the Outer Banks being pretty much like here, only with a bigger bay in between the barrier islands and mainland.
