:o

That was a good read. Funny how the really bad stuff never seems to happen when you're doing something truly dangerous,m it always pops up in the middle of some mundane task. Must be because we're being more careful when doing something stupid. Some very good lessons in there, too. Thanks!

I don't wear it in the summer but when I'm duck hunting or ice fishing I wear a mustang float coat.
Whenever we're in big water or in the little boat we wear them. It's like a regular coat, not just a life vest. Jehler has one and after seeing mine shoot n goose bought one.

The one I have is black and blends in just fine when in the blind.

I have one as well and I always put on and make my passengers put on a PFD if we leave Munscong bay. The only reason I feel safe in that bay is it's only 4ft deep at it's deepest so if the boat over turned we would just stand up.

Most of the areas I hunt are shallow other than the channels which are anywhere from 10-80ft wide. Getting to dry land/marsh isnt an issue, its the getting back to hard ground thats the problem. Walking that gray mud in the summer while dry would be a feat.

That story is a good reminder for all of us. Stay safe fellas.

x1,000,000. I fear that bottomless mud far more than the deepest water. That stuff'll kill you.

You got that right. We put a blind up on a lease we have. Once we cut through the roots with the post hole diggers we could shove 10ft 6x6's in by hand, and a few you could pull down with one hand.

When we were out clamming with the kids a few weeks back, I got in some. I was mid thigh before I could wiggle out, with no sign of bottom, and this was only knee deep water. If it would've happened with waders on, it could've been ugly. Never happened to me clamming before. And it's cold, too.

I know the guy that wrote that story. Dave Mull. A lot of my fishing gear was bought at his annual garage sales. He used to live about 5 miles from me. Not sure where he moved to now. Lost touch with him when he got involved with Great Lakes Angler Magazine.

We some soft mud here but once the tide comes in you can walk on it easier. I guess because you float and don't weigh as much?

We have a lease on the bayside near the MD line. Last winter I was walking back from hiding the boat to get into the blind and found a hole without a bottom. The only thing that kept me from sliding under that marsh was my gun. A bit scary. A lot of our marshes are actually floating. When we built our blinds once we cut through the roots we could put a 10ft 6x6 down by hand.

that's how the marsh is here on the island. you can't wade in the creeks or ponds. hell, you can't even walk across the marsh in most places because of holes. but on the beach side of the sound you can walk just about any where except for the man-made creeks that have filled in with silt.
