How do they know....

When season is over? Its only been a week since season went out and I went with my buddy to help him clean decoys out of the pit blinds and this is what I see. He was out there yesterday and said there was probably double this many, all standing on or next to the mound that the pit is burried in. The kicker, when I drove the truck to within 80 yard of them they got up and flew 30 feet and set back down. Bastards.

I wonder the same every year.

I parked 30 yards away from a couple thousand snows.

My truck was parked in the field as I was putting the lids on the blind. The specks were landing about 70 yards away and didn't give a shit.

Probably the lack of shooting would be their first clue.

I thought they'd all moved to this end now.

The pond at the water treatment plant by my shop is holding cans, mallards, buffleheads, and shovelers now that season is over. There was quite a few on there during season but now it and my irrigation pond are loaded with ducks, and there gets to be even more going into early march.

I think there is like 2 ducks left in northern Michigan right now.

When the seasons are set by the Federal Fish and Wildlife Service, they do a survey of the migratory game birds and part of that survey is consulting with the birds themselves to set the seasons. While we are waiting for season dates and bag limits, the birds already have the information.

Study up on Illinois hunting seasons, zones, and specifically dates. There's a wee tiny hole in your theory.

I read a couple weeks ago there were still 10,000 some place up there, but I had a hard time believing the article even though it was put out by the DNR.
