Fucking bankers...(Discover Card rant)

OK -I'll start off by saying that I've been a Discover customer for a loooooooooooong time. So long I'm still under the agreement that pays 5% cash back, probably 15-16 years.

So, I use my personal card for work travel and business expenses and just grab all the rewards for myself. It's not uncommon to run $4k a month across it and in high use months (like this one)$10k is probably realistic.

I'll also freely admit that I do not dissect my statement. One of the pitfalls of online banking. I just look at the balance, and pay it - figuring any difference between the amount due and my reimbursement check from the bank is for shit I bought personally.

Enter today. I noticed that I got overcharged by the hotel we stayed at this week by 2x, I called the hotel and was told to call back Monday, the manager would have to take care of it.

Bullshit says I.

So, I log on to Discover.com and pull up the customer service number and dial them up - while waiting on hold I start reviewing my January statement and notice a fee for "PPI" in the amount of $47.36. wtf?? So I look at December - "PPI" of $114.54...WTF??

So, about then Brittany, a lovley lass picks up and I go through the issue with her with the hotel and she quickly resolves it. Then asks I - "Can you see my last statement - What's this fee for PPI"??? To which Brittany casually responds - "Oh, thats for Payment Protection Insurance". "OK", says I, "Whats that for"??

Brittany responds "Well, if you ever had a major life event, job loss, injury, illness, or something like that - the insurance would cover your minimum payments until you were back on your feet"

I replied "Brittany, look at my payment history. I pay the balances in full every month."

"Hmmmm - I see that. Let me transfer you to an account manager"

"Hello, this is Vicky - how may I help you??"

"Hi Vicky. I need some explanation regarding the PPI."

"Certainly, I'd be glad to help. It's insurance that makes the minimum payments should you ever have a major life event, job loss, illness, injury or something like that...."(gets cut off by Dan) "Yes. I am now aware of what it is. Brittany explained it. My question is why am I being charged?? I pay my balance off at the end of each month."

"OK, so you want to discontinue the coverage??"

"Ummmmm - when did I agree to the coverage?? I not only want to cancel it, I want ALL my money refunded - wait - How are these fees even calculated??

ALERT - If your first name is Jim and you live in Maryland - you should discontinue reading this thread or at the very least find a place to sit down and have cigarettes and whiskey handy before going on

Vicky: "Well the coverage is calculated and billed at a rate of .89/$100 of the outstanding balance, you've had the coverage since September 13, 2009"
Dan: "So wait. You're telling me that if I paid December to $0, and spent $10,000 in January, then my outstanding balance is $10,089????"
Vicky: "I guess that is correct."
Dan: "Vicky, when did I agree to this?? Its the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of"
Vicky: "Well it looks like you were enrolled in a trial membership at first...." (gets cut off)
Dan : "Vicky I want all my money back. [b]ALL OF IT[b]
Vicky : "I apologize sir, I'm not sure how far back we can refund..." (gets cut off)
Dan : "All of it"

Soooooo - I've digging up statements this morning, going back through 2012 and the average charge is...$78/month. If that math holds true through since Sept 13, 2009 thats $4,134. HOLY SHIT, do I feel like a retard.

I guess, the dispute has been filed and I will be getting a call on Monday from Vicky's supervisor.

Wow that sucks!

I had an electric company charge me for someone else's account for almost 6 months. Living in the Soo with no A/C and the price of electricity was already so low because of the power plant right there that I never noticed due to auto payment. I never even looked at it. They refunded me of course.

What does a credit card company call a customer like Dan who pays up every month?
Remind me.

Well if .89/$100 = $4k, then 5% Cashback (5.00/$100) means I've gotten back +/- $20k in Cashback over the same period.

I'm still up, just not as far as this Jew figures he should be.

If they do call, make sure you post your rant when they offer to reduce your interest as compensation. Even though you pay it off in full every month.

Ha ha - will do. They've been trying to get me off the 5% cashback program for probably 5 years, it's coming eventually.

I have one credit card. When the original card expired they sent me a new one and when I activated it, that is when they say I agreed to this same "payment protection" bullshit. I caught on to it only two months in though and was refunded.

The credit is already showing on my account - it was less than I anticipated by a few hundred dollars.

Fuckee indeed.

Good for you man! They probably realized you weren't the one who would let it go.

But assa is right, we still cant believe you didn't catch it sooner. I guess its like when a mechanic drives a piece of shit car and the cobblers kids go barefoot.

Or the most witty savings account EVER!

Would be a badass if you got them to pay you interest.
