Another Level

Postby assateague » Sun Aug 19, 2012 10:21 pm

It's been a while since I posted any of these pics. I've been plugging along, average harvests, putting up a couple quarts at a time. But for the last week it's been raining every night and hot and sunny every day, and the garden blew up.

Today alone i picked a little more than a half bushel of string beans, over a bushel of tomatoes (the cooler's full too), and a ton of jalapeños. Even 4 of these cursed chocolate habaneros. Just now finishing up coring and peeling the tomatoes. Tomorrow, can some sauce, salsa, pepper slices, and beans.

You ate 2 ghost peppers. These would probably be like candy.

One year when I was still living at home my dad grew a bunch of those little red peppers you have on the string (he really likes hot chit), he also dried them the same way. One day he decided he wanted them chopped up to use while cooking, and figured the blender would be the best tool for the job. He put on his respirator and saftey goggles from the garage and went after it. We spent the rest of the day outside if you know what I mean.

Last year I tried to dry them using my dehydrator instead of hanging them. We basically couldn't go in the kitchen for about 30 hours. It turned the downstairs into a tear gas chamber.

I know that 'gas chamber' feeling. My mom still brings it up to throw in my dad's face from time to time, and its probably been 20 years.

Things to never do that I learned online. Don't dry peppers in a dehydrator and don't put them in a blender.

x2...I mowed over my attempt at a garden last night. Got sick of looking at the tomato plants on life support.

No way. Since I pretty much have all the canned jalapenos I could possibly want already, and another solid month of growing to come, I am in negotiations with two Mexican markets nearby to arrange store credit for jalapenos. Trying to work the best deal I can, since I love those Mexican Cokes.

I'm serious. After your vivid description of the taste, and my love for spicy foods, I HAVE to find me one of those chocolate habaneros. It just sounds awesome.

I'll send you one when the next round has ripened. It should make the trip just fine.

I will, no problem. It may be another week or two, since all the rest are still green and not even beginning to change. The flavor actually is pretty unique, as I realized when I burped it for several hours afterward.
