A Test

Postby assateague » Fri Mar 21, 2014 11:55 am

Betty talking about how calls sound from a distance is what made me decide to try it. Last season, I was hunting with a buddy who had a cheap Knight and Hale, and it sounded horrible. Absolutely horrible. But once, I was out picking up a duck, about 40 yards out in the bay, and he blew it at a couple black ducks, and it sounded really, really good. Completely different than when sitting next to it. So I'm on board with the "Betty Theory" as well, just wanted to see the difference.

I'll say in advance that I'm not much on calling ducks, and I'm still not too sure about this new goose call, but we'll see. Takes not much air to make it run, but takes a much harder break over to get it to go, if that makes sense. Funny thing was, the duck call sounded better from further away, but the goose call seemed to be the exact opposite. More like a party favor from a distance, and more like a goose call the closer I got to the phone. So that's something to think about, I suppose. Sorry for the dog barking, but he hates it when I go outside without him.

Mannnn. I was having "test anxiety" thinking OMG what has he got up his sleeve?
Hesitated about opening the thread.
Funny. I'll do a similar test at my parent house this afternoon if you want. I've been running back and forth trying to get the damned lawnmower running. I think it needs a new battery, new oil, and a new spark plug.
I hate spending my money on my parents fucking problem.

I believe he can call geese! It sounded much better from a distance.

By the way, thanks for making the video. I've been wondering what you look like not wearing cargo shorts n crocs and what you voice sounded like. I kinda had you pictured as a Sgt. Slaughter.

Am I the only one thinking they sound pretty much the same, just closer and farther away?

Could be. The goose call sounds very flat to me from further away, but maybe not.

Definitely interesting. I noticed a difference with the goose call.

I've personally heard the opposite of farther away = good. We were standing in cat tails that were about a foot over our heads. Next to each other, the calls sounded good. When I walked about 40 yards away, the sound bounced/echoed of the reeds in a very horrible way.

OK, I'm going way out on a limb here and will post a calling video.
Get your chainsaws ready to hack the limb off.

I'm not real proud of the last three quacks but the rest is pretty spot-on.

Same beard. Same call.

Thought it sounded damn fine at the further distance, which is the way it should be - most of the ducks I'm calling to ain't sitting in the blind with me.
Takes bigger balls then I have to post a calling video.

Thanks frylock

For some reason a smooth call don't really do it for me. Them crackly, raspy, rattly ones do.
Like I said. Just cuz a call sounds good to a human don't mean shit. We're not calling other duck hunters.
The noises I make on that call is "duck candy". Take it or leave it.

Sounded fine but it sounds the same just at a further distance. Same sounds sound the same, put the same sounds at different distances and they still sound the same just at different distances. Maybe if there were something in the way(trees, reeds, etc) to bounce the sound around or break it up it might be different.

I hear ya. I sometimes record myself calling just so I can feel for what I sound like to the ducks. Having that call in your mouth ten inches from your ears really isn't indicative of what the birds are hearing. It's eye opening to get a new perspective on the sounds you're making and it's taught me a bunch.

If you want to take that as "bashing" feel free, but would you really rather I lied just to make you feel you made a point you hadn't?

The book on cutdowns is that they're supposed to sound clanky up close but like a duck from a distance. That didn't sound any more like a duck at a distance than it did up close. Just sounded more distant. Fwiw, I've never seen a Kirk McCullough video that made him sound like a duck, either. But we all know he can call ducks.

From what I've seen, sounding "just like a duck" is vastly overrated, anyway. It's my understanding that a common upper level ornithology class experiment demonstrates that birds can be much more attracted to exaggerated caricatures of their calls than to faithful renditions of them. And I'd think most of us who've been at it a while have seen some pretty "awful" callers work wonders. Know I'm seldom trying to sound "just like a duck" just "ducky".

That's one thing I've noticed/been learning in calling ducks, I get more response out of much longer exaggerated notes or quicker faster paced notes than I do out of duck notes. Much more, it seems to grab there attention more. Almost like reaction strike when fishing and you bang your lure against a stump or log.
