Just need to vent a bit.

Last week we stayed at a hotel near the airport, because we had an early flight.

We get to TSA and my wife realizes that she's left her engagement ring and wedding band ('twas a set) in the bathroom at the hotel. (AFTER I asked her if she got everything from the bathroom - but that's another story).

I called the hotel, and the gal went right to our room @ 6am and called me 5 minutes later and said "they were right where you said they would be, I've got them - do you want me to mail them to you or will you be coming by to pick them up??"
I told her we were just leaving, but would be back on 4/4 if she wouldn't mind holding them in the safe.

Fast forward to this evening...

I go to the front desk at the hotel, after searching a few places the clerk finds an envelope with my wife's name on it, her phone number, the date we said we'd return, all seems well....except, there is only one ring in the envelope - and of course - it's not the one with the diamonds in it.

Mother Fucker.

I've got ZERO recourse. We certainly bear the responsibility for the fact that they were left in the room.

I guess I'm just disappointed that someone chose to steal the ring - knowing that we were coming back for it.
I'd have given them 3x what they got for it at the pawn shop - because the value to us isn't in the metal and stones, but in the idea of what it represented - but it's gone, forever.

Damn! Try searching pawn shops in the area if you can. I would be pretty pissed if my or my wifes ring was gone, let alone stolen. Hope you get it back somehow...

That sucks brother. Any chance that the fact that the manager is the one that said "they are both here right where you described" holds any weight? Or do you think the manager is the one that pocketed it?

I've got her name (at least a first name)...I'm no attorney, but it's nothing more than hearsay.

I thought about checking the pawns, but again, we stayed there 10 days ago - ancient history by pawn standards.

I unbolted a TV and moved it once while at a hotel. They didn't like that at all.

I always check under the mattress for porn. I also look behind any of the pictures on the wall if they aren't screwed to the wall. I found a dollar bill and a dorito once.

First thing I do in a hotel room in the summer is take the stupid "suicide blocker" off the damn window so I can open them all the way. Other than that and moving the TV I don't think I've ever messed with anything else.

The last motel I stayed in, I had to repair the toilet to take a shit.
Before I left I made sure and left them some shit and returned toilet to original condition. They're probably used to it.

The quality of ppl I see manning a motel lobby suggest that an employee, possibly the one who claimed, "they're both here" was dumb enough to take it.

I know it sounds stupid but, maybe call down there on a weekday and ask to speak to the Manager or owner. If someone makes the right kinda stink about it, it could reappear in the safe. It's worth a shot to at least call.
Say something like "I need you to check for another envelope because only one of the rings was in this one."
It fuckin' sucks but, it's worth a try.
I know you gotta be pissed. Like someone else said, don't let the ol' lady beat herself up over it.

That sucks man, what sucks even more is not much you can do about it. I call around to all the pawnshops in the area, chances are if they find out something was sold to them stolen they will work with you if they're a decent shop.

Hey Dan, aren't rings covered under homeowners insurance? It won't get you the exact one back, but maybe a replica?

Usually, unless you put jewelry on a schedule and pay more for specific coverage, homeowners insurance limits jewelry claims to $500 and sometimes require a police report to back up your claim. That might be a good idea, file a police report even though it is 10 days later. Tell the police that you talked to the manager and she told you that she would put the rings in the safe. If they do any investigation at all, it might turn up the ring. Good luck.

This^ just cause it got pawned doesn't mean its not still sitting in a display case. I'd go check.
