Influxes of weird ducks in the past few years.

Postby ducks~n~bucks » Fri Jul 25, 2014 1:05 am

Has anyone else noticed this? I don't mean necessarily uncommon ducks in general, but ducks uncommon to your area showing up more often. Here in CA, or at least near where I live, I have noticed a lot more canvasbacks the last couple years, a lot of hooded mergansers (which neither my dad or I have seen before 2-3 years ago) and some goldeneye showed up last year. Among the puddlers in my area, an influx of wigeon, gaddys and pintail, and the spoonies showed up locally where I've never seen them, nor has anyone else I talked to. Also, specs were out where my dad has never seen them in his life. Last year especially, mallards and wood ducks were the minority here, when in the past that was all you shot with the occasional pintail or wigeon. Have you guys noticed things like this in the Sac valley? In other states?

Nope, not really...... Maybe the lake is seeing more birds the last couple of season because of the lack of water on the west side of the valley forcing them there.

No, we are defnately not seeing "more" birds, just more variety.

Same difference brother. Just more birds using the lake is all. The hooded mergansers could be a result of woodduck boxes in your area. Those thing nest like crazy in them around here if it's near a waterway that has fish and stuff in it.

Seen a lot more Redheads the past couple years. And last season I know of about a dozen wood ducks taken right around the local area. Which even according to the few old timer duck hunters around here doesn't ever happen.

Influx of cans, redheads, and buffleheads here. Not really THAT uncommon here before but we've seen a lot more in the last two seasons. Also saw a group of shovelers at the golf course pond a couple days after our season ended in January.

We saw a whole bunch more of all types of diving ducks last year. Cans like crazy. Never seen so many. Alot more golden eye, red heads, and rudys than usual

Saw and shot a lot more gadwall than I ever have. Seemed to be the consensus with most people around here.

Hard to judge off last year with the poor numbers in our area but our kamikaze gadwalls seemed all but absent. By mid season we are usually getting greedy and passing Gadwall for more mixed bags.

We had plenty of Teal and Mallards for the first 3 weeks , then the Specks moved in along with the Snows driving out the
Ducks so , all we hunted was geese for most of the season which wasn't bad . I guess it was an advantage to not hunting
big water as the sloughs invited more good puddle ducks .

You know come to think of it me and olly were pretty sure we saw a flock of gadwall fly down the middle of a lake we were hunting around Christmas last year. Couldn't confirm it though bc they were so far away. Not all that common here but for some reason way more common over in Alabama.
